Dylan/McCartney?

May 26, 2009 10:22 AM

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Bob Dylan confessed that he would love to write with Paul McCartney.

"That'd be exciting to do something with Paul!" he said. "But, ya know, your paths have to cross for something like that to make sense."

As soon as Macca's camp got word of Dylan's interest they relayed the message to Paul, who is reportedly also interested in a collaboration.

Now, the Daily Express is reporting the two will record together this summer. Citing an "insider" as a source, the paper says the pair plan to work as a duo and will do the recording in one of their homes in SoCal.

“Paul has a home in California not too far from Bob’s so the idea is for the two to meet when Paul is in California over the summer,” says the mole.

“They’ll obviously want to work in privacy and it’s felt one of their homes will be the best bet. Getting these two together for any length of time is difficult schedule-wise but they both want this to work out. The music that comes out of this will be fascinating to hear.”

Kid Rock's Bad Ass Summer

May 12, 2009 11:22 AM

Yesterday we rang up our drinking buddy Kid Rock at the adult amusement park he calls home, near Detroit. We called to congratulate Rock for selling out all 35,000 seats of Comerica Park -- home of the Detroit Tigers -- in less than thirty minutes! Tickets went so fast for the July 17th hometown show that they added another night. “We try to do a lot of stuff to make it so everybody can come out,” he says. “The most important thing is keeping tickets right. Not to get greedy.” Those gigs are part of a huge Summer tour of the U.S.

Rock answered the phone at his home studio, where he's been crankin' away on the follow-up to his 2007 blockbuster, Rock & Roll Jesus. “I have 12 songs,” he tells us. “Everyone who’s heard it thinks it’s my best stuff ever.”

Rock had intended to be on the road right now, but postponed the run because he was feeling artistic. “Everyone thought I was crazy for turning down that money, but I saw I was in a good spot creatively.”

Rock & Roll Jesus guitarist Marlon Young is back, and Detroit-native Herschel Boone -- a veteran of Mary J. Blige's band, who Rock describes as a “tremendous singer" -- is helping out with melodies and vocals. Rock says that he's also been getting advice from producer Rick Rubin, and if all the stars align, the album may come out as soon as November.

And Rock hopes to have his signature beer available by Labor Day. Rock exclusively reveals to the S.S. that his beer will be named, fittingly, Bad Ass Beer. “It’s good. It just tastes like good American light beer, and there's no aftertaste.”

Rock adds, "There are so many funny ads you can do with a thing called Bad Ass Beer."

Dylan and McCartney? Yes, Please!

May 7, 2009 11:09 AM

If you haven't picked it up yet, we highly recommend you get yourself a copy of the new issue of Rolling Stone. The cover story on Bob Dylan is so good -- his commentary on the state of the union, and the state of the planet, is so incisive.

In the piece Dylan tells writer Douglas Brinkley he's interested in working on a project with Paul McCartney.

"That would be exciting - to do something with Paul," says Dylan. "But, you know, your paths have to cross for something like that to make sense."

Obviously, McCartney's camp got wind and have been in touch about a possible collaboration!

A McCartney spokesperson told the Independent, "We heard the offer this morning," the spokesperson said. "It would be a pretty major thing if it went ahead."

No shit!

Nickelback Singer Sued!

May 5, 2009 12:27 PM

Back in 2007, Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger allegedly busted the face of furniture sales representative Noah Morse outside of a Vancouver bar. Morse is now suing Kroeger for loss of income and medical expenses.

Apparently Kroeger packs a punch. Morse claims he got a concussion, was knocked out cold and suffered "one deadened front tooth, dislodged upper front teeth and permanent discoloration of more front teeth."

(If we got beat up by a member of Nickelback we'd probably keep it to ourselves.)

In other news, the Kings of Leon ought to sue Nickelback for their shit-laden cover, "Use Somebody."

Just try to watch the clip below of guitarist Ryan Peake butchering the tune! We dare you!

It's so awful. Do they even rehearse?

Help Wake Up Lucid Get To SXSW

April 22, 2009 1:11 PM

A few weeks ago, we acted on tips from our loyal SS readers to check out the LA-based trio Wake Up Lucid. We were impressed, tracked 'em down and talked to frontman Ryan Baca about their music and their rapid rise since hitting the SoCal circuit just a few months ago.

Now, we'd like to pass on a little more good news.

Ryan Baca just sent us a note saying that Wake Up Lucid will be hitting the legendary Village Studios in Los Angeles to track their first EP. No word on when it will be finished, but if their demos are any indication of what's in store, we're expecting raunchy rock at it's best.

Also, if you dig the band and have a spare thirty seconds, head here to vote for Wake Up Lucid in the Urban Outfitters "Your Band Here" contest.

The winning band will receive a slot at next years South by Southwest.

System of a Down's Drummer Auditions for Smashing Pumpkins

April 20, 2009 10:41 AM

Billy Corgan is the Smashing Pumpkins, and after drummer Jimmy Chamberlain quit the band (again) recently, Corgan announced an open call for his replacement. The first round of auditions went down on Tuesday, April 16th, and according to the Pumpkin's website, System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan gave it a shot.

From the website:

"Overall the drumming auditions were considered a very positive experience. The talent in all the drummers that tried out was incredible. Some of the candidates include John Dolmayan of System of a Down and Frank Lenz, a past band-mate of guitarist Jeff Schroeder from The Lassie Foundation."

We're not sure how impressed Corgan was by Dolmayan's skills -- according to the Pumpkins website, they're thinking about holding another audition in May due to the "overwhelming response" from drummers around the world.

Do you think Dolmayan would be a good fit? Do you give a flying shit?

Lunch with Stevie Nicks

April 15, 2009 11:39 AM

If we had a single regret about going to Australia with the Kings of Leon (for RS's current cover story), it would be that we missed Fleetwood Mac performing at Madison Square Garden. But, when we returned, we had the pleasure of lunching with Ms. Stevie Nicks, who was in New York to promote her new live CD-DVD, The Soundstage Sessions: Live in Chicago, a collection featuring some of her biggest hits and baddest rarities. We chatted about the first time she met Lindsey Buckingham (at a Mormon Party), and that time she unceremoniously dumped Don Henley

But it was truly awesome to rap about "Silver Springs," an amazing track that was left off Rumours. The song is about her breakup with Buckingham -- "I'll follow you down till the sound of my voice will haunt you," she sings. "It was me realizing that Lindsey was going to haunt me for the rest of my life," she says. "And he has."

When she performs "Silver Springs" these days -- it's the final number on Fleetwood Mac's current tour -- Nicks resists the opportunity to get up in Lindsey's face: "I don't want fans to walk away in the middle of our argument."

Bob Dylan Digs Billy Joe Shaver, Writes with Robert Hunter

April 15, 2009 11:20 AM

One of Bob Dylan's greatest lines on his new album, Together Through Life, is from "I Feel a Change Comin' On." Over a gentle groove, he sings, "I'm listening to Billy Joe Shaver, and I'm reading James Joyce/Some people they tell me I've got the blood of the land in my voice."

Well, the S.S. called Shaver, the 69-year-old country-outlaw legend, at home in Waco, Texas, to see what he thought. "It was really nice of him," says Shaver. "It's nice to be mentioned in the same sentence with James Joyce too."

Dylan has long been a Shaver fan. For the soundtrack to the 1987 flick Hearts of Fire, Dylan recorded Shaver's "Old Five and Dimers Like Me." (It didn't make the film, but you can find it on bootlegs.) And the respect is mutual. Shaver got into Bob back when he was busking on street corners. "After I first heard him, I got upset because I couldn't figure out what else there was left to say," Shaver recalls. "I decided not to listen to him again or I'd go home with my hat in my hand. So I threw all my Dylan tapes in the Brazos River."

The Dylan fan site ISIS reports that all lyrics on Together Through Life were written by Dylan and Robert Hunter (who, along with Jerry Garcia, co-wrote a majority of the Grateful Dead lyrics), with the exception being "This Dream of You," which was written completely by Dylan.

What do you think about the Dylan/Hunter connection?
