Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band, Lucinda Williams and North Carolina bluegrassers the Avett Brothers have been added to the line-up.

Held between August 28th and 30th at Golden Gate Park -- where we used to get super-baked when we were kids growin' up in Frisco -- Outside Lands will also host sets by Pearl Jam, the Beastie Boys and Dave Matthews Band as well as S.S. favorites Ween, the Mars Volta, Modest Mouse, TV on the RadioMastodon, Heartless Bastards, Matt & Kim and a ton more.

Lebowski Fest Goes West

April 22, 2009 11:33 AM

Attention achievers! The Lebowski Fest is back, and this year's tour takes the two-day, screening and bowling parties through the west coast with dates in Los Angeles, Louisville, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Oakland, San Diego and Las Vegas.

Lebowski Fest is a special time when super-fans of The Big Lebowski dress up as their favorite characters. In addition to the bowling, there will be games such as the Marmot Fling, where "Achievers" catapult a stuffed ferret into a small bath tub, or the Ringer Toss, which involves tossing a bag of tightie-whitie underwear out of a '72 Plymouth Fury III toward a Nihilist dummy target. There's also live music, scene reenactments and art exhibits.

The Lebowski Fest kicks off in LA on May 7th and 8th, where fans will get to meet the original Dude, Jeff Dowd, as well as a bunch of actors from the film, including the two jerks who soiled the Dude's rug. Louisville's fest will have a special stand-up performance from the Daily Show's Rob Riggle and music by the Black Diamond Heavies and Whistle Peak.

Click the jump for the dates, and go here for more information.

Mark it.

All Points West Is Back and Better Than Ever

March 30, 2009 10:30 AM

Photo: Denholm/WireImage

Last year we attended the All Points West festival in Liberty Park, New Jersey, and let us sum it up with a two-word review: "Shit sandwich."

The biggest problems were A) the fact that it took hours to get a goddamn beer because of ridiculous security precautions and, B) the fact that it took hours to get a goddamn beer.

That said, the A.P.W. fest is back this year, and festival producers Goldenvoice (who also stage Coachella) promise that there will be larger concessions, and that the beer gardens will be relocated so that you can actually see bands while you're in there.

Confirmed acts include: The Beastie Boys, Tool and Coldplay, who will serve as headliners at APW, held between July 31st through August 2nd. Also, MGMT, My Bloody Valentine, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fleet Foxes, the Black Keys, Heartless Bastards, the Ting Tings, Neko Case, Vampire Weekend, the National and plenty more.

Sounds pretty good.

Will Metallica Play SXSW?

March 11, 2009 11:48 AM

OK. Here's how it all breaks down.

The Stubbs schedule for the South by Southwest festival was republished this morning with some interesting changes. On Friday, March 20th, at 10:00 pm there will be a Guitar Hero Metallica challenge -- not all that exciting.

But the 10:30 slot is filled by a band called Volsung, hailing from "Somewhere, Norway." Volsung, a band no one has ever heard of, has a two hour, prime-time slot at one of the best venues in Austin, during one of the best music festivals in America.

Is Volsung a cover-up for Metallica? According to Norwegian mythology, Volsung was killed by a Geatish king, and then avenged by one of his sons, named Sigmund. More importantly, though, is that in the English story of Beowulf, after Beowulf slays Grendel, a Danish bard sings about Sigmund and his father.

Lars Ulrich is Danish!

Coincidence?

Dr. Feelgood Turns Twenty!

March 3, 2009 1:06 PM

Motley Crue will once again venture into the festival circuit this summer -- they just announced dates for the second annual Crue Fest.

And the theme of these summer gigs is their classic album, Dr. Feelgood, which the Crue released twenty years ago (in September).

Motley Crue will play the album from beginning to end at every stop on the tour.

That album has some sentimental value for the Smoking Section. Not only was it one of the first albums we ever bought (we were ten years old) but that power ballad "Without You" was "our song" with our very first girlfriend, Sarah.

Takes us back!

Bonnaroo Busts Out 2009 Line-Up

February 3, 2009 10:52 AM

The Bonnaroo line-up was announced this morning and.... we're a bit underwhelmed with the headlining acts!

Two performances by Phish? (One is plenty.)

And Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band? (Sure, it'll be fun, but isn't Bruce totally played out these days?)

Anyway, to each their own.

Thankfully, the supporting cast should make us all happy.

Of course, we'll be descending on Tennessee once again thanks to the Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, Mars Volta, Lucinda Williams, Al Green (our hero), Animal CollectiveSnoop Dogg, Wilco, David ByrneTV on the Radio, MGMT, Elvis Costello, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Ting Tings, among others.

Additional artists will be announced over the next few weeks, Let's pray that one of them is Stevie Wonder.

Tickets go on sale on Saturday February 7th and will be available on the Bonnaroo website.

Does Coachella's 2009 line-up look stronger than Bonnaroo?

Still too close to call.
