Kid Rock's Bad Ass Summer

Yesterday we rang up our drinking buddy Kid Rock at the adult amusement park he calls home, near Detroit. We called to congratulate Rock for selling out all 35,000 seats of Comerica Park -- home of the Detroit Tigers -- in less than thirty minutes! Tickets went so fast for the July 17th hometown show that they added another night. “We try to do a lot of stuff to make it so everybody can come out,” he says. “The most important thing is keeping tickets right. Not to get greedy.” Those gigs are part of a huge Summer tour of the U.S.

Rock answered the phone at his home studio, where he's been crankin' away on the follow-up to his 2007 blockbuster, Rock & Roll Jesus. “I have 12 songs,” he tells us. “Everyone who’s heard it thinks it’s my best stuff ever.”

Rock had intended to be on the road right now, but postponed the run because he was feeling artistic. “Everyone thought I was crazy for turning down that money, but I saw I was in a good spot creatively.”

Rock & Roll Jesus guitarist Marlon Young is back, and Detroit-native Herschel Boone -- a veteran of Mary J. Blige's band, who Rock describes as a “tremendous singer" -- is helping out with melodies and vocals. Rock says that he's also been getting advice from producer Rick Rubin, and if all the stars align, the album may come out as soon as November.

And Rock hopes to have his signature beer available by Labor Day. Rock exclusively reveals to the S.S. that his beer will be named, fittingly, Bad Ass Beer. “It’s good. It just tastes like good American light beer, and there's no aftertaste.”

Rock adds, "There are so many funny ads you can do with a thing called Bad Ass Beer."

Kings On Fire

Is there a hotter band in the world than Kings of Leon?

We just got back from Nashville where we spent time with the Followill's for a BIG story in Rolling Stone. We cruised around in Matthew's new Corvette. Caleb made us a delicious dinner. We kicked it with Jared at his place and played some golf with Nathan. We spoke with their friends and relatives.

Forget everything you thought you knew about the Kings -- the real story of their childhoods and their rise to fame is going to blow your minds!

And get this: in two weeks we're flying down to Australia to hook up with them again for a week in Sydney!

Look for the feature in the mag in April!

Sneak Preview of Wilco Doc Ashes of American Flags

Ashes of American Flags -- the new Wilco documentary -- will have its world premiere tomorrow night at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival in Montana. On February 25th, it will screen at the Noise Pop festival in San Francisco.

But the S.S. watched the film this morning... and there is some killer footage!

Ashes of American Flags follows Wilco on their club tour through the Midwest and Southeast in early 2008, capturing highlights from shows at Tipitina's in New Orleans, 9:30 Club in D.C., and gigs in Mobile and Tulsa.

"I'm afraid this show tonight is going to have an asterisk next to it because I'm on steroids," Jeff Tweedy tells a hopped up crowd at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, adding that his voice would be gone if he hadn't 'Roided up. With that, Wilco launch into the nastiest version of "A Shot In the Arm" ever rendered.

The performances are the focus, and as anyone who's seen Wilco recently, they've never been hotter. We won't spoil everything, but we will say the roughly fifteen performances span their whole career. (Our favorites: "Kingpin," "Handshake Drugs" and a stunning take on the title track from a soundcheck at Cain's, in Tulsa.)

There's no drama like their last doc, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. All the dudes in the band wax about the highs and lows of life on the road. There's even some footage of Tweedy hanging with his dad. "Every time he reaches the pinnacle," says Pops Tweedy, clearly embarrassing his son, "he just goes a little higher." (True!)

Kicking back on the tour bus, Tweedy sums it up. "Our band has made its living on the road. From the beginning I think that every step of the way was thrilling to us."

Deftones bassist Chi Cheng is in "serious but stable condition" in a San Jose, CA hospital after being involved in a car accident on Monday. Some reports claim he is in a coma, while a statement from the band says he is in the ICU under the supervision of doctors.

"I don't know everything that's going on - I just know it's very serious," Deftones singer Chino Moreno said in an interview with the Sacramento Bee yesterday. "I'm on my way to be with his family. I'm pretty freaked out about it."

Cheng's mother requests that everyone say a prayer for the 38-year old musician and accomplished poet.

Let's do it.

Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix announced Monday that he'll be quitting films to pursue a career in music. According to Phoenix's camp, the born again musician is collaborating on a debut record with British rocker Tim Burgess of the Charlatans.

The actor told People back in 2004, "I don't sing. I don't even hum in the shower", but of course took vocal lessons and learned guitar for his decent turn as Johnny Cash in 2005's biopic Walk The Line

Beastie Boys Add Shows To Swing State Tour

The Beastie Boys have added three shows to their upcoming swing state tour. The five-day "Get Out and Vote" concert series now begins on October 27th in Charlotte, NC and will include performances by Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Graham Nash, Norah Jones, Santogold, Sheryl Crow and Tenacious D. The non-partisan tour will make stops through Virginia, Ohio, and Minnesota before closing out on November 2nd at Milwaukee's U.S. Cellular Arena.

"This election is too important to stay home," Beastie Boy Mike D told Rolling Stone. "Looking at musicians when they take on serious social issues with some degree of cynicism is probably healthy, because you don’t really ever know what people’s intentions are. But everybody is like, ‘What could I possibly do to weigh in here?’ You know we can try and make phone calls, and that’s good, but we could also probably reach a lot more people by doing this."

AC/DC have chosen Irish rock group the Answer as the supporting act for their upcoming North American tour. It's the first time the Answer have played America, but they're no virgins when it comes to opening for rock gods - they've kicked off gigs with the Who, Aerosmith and the Stones.

"It's an honor and privilege for the Answer to be offered the opportunity to support probably the greatest rock and roll act on the planet," says lead singer Cormac Neeson. "We are incredibly humbled."

Phish Reunite as Porter Batiste Stoltz Finish Tour With Page McConnell

Phish are back! After a five year hiatus, the jam-giants have booked three shows at the Hampton Coliseum in Virginia (on sale October 18), and the band plans on gigging more in 2009.

While Phish were on their break, there were plenty of side projects: Trey Anastasio released a slew of solo discs, toured with Phil Lesh and along with Phish bassist Mike Gordon, teamed up with the Benevento Russo Duo for GRAB

Our favorite collaboration, though, was keyboardist Page McConnell's hook-up with New Orleans funk legends Porter Batiste Stoltz.

Last November, when PBS played in Burlington, Vermont, McConnell sat in with the trio. "They were like, 'What are you doing tonight?'" McConnell recalls. "I was going to the show anyway, but they asked me if I wanted to play. I sat in for one of their sets and have been around ever since.

Since then, recordings of the show have been one of the most coveted bootlegs in the jam scene. Now, PBS + Page will release the highlights from the legendary set as a live album, titled Moodoo, out now

The S.S. sat down with the guys and talked Moodoo. Click the jump for what they have to say, and take a listen to "I Get High," below.
