After releasing a slew of fantastic EP's this year -- four, to be exact -- one of our favorite songwriters, Joseph Arthur, will drop his seventh album, Temporary People, on September 30th. Arthur, who was born in Akron, OH, is a protege of Peter Gabriel, who signed Arthur to his label, Real World Records, in the mid-Nineties. And he is a favorite among his contemporaries. For instance, his song, "In the Sun", was recorded by Chris Martin and Michael Stipe for a Hurricane Katrina benefit. And in anticipation of Temporary People, here's what the R.E.M frontman has to say about Arthur:
"Jo is one of those rare writer-performers where you get the sense, whatever your belief, that something greater is being channeled through his music and voice. Like Patti Smith, Grant Lee Phillips, Thom Yorke, he trances, and the voice, the meaning, becomes bigger than him, bigger than a few pop chords or words strung together. It touches something very deep and universal."
