S.S. Exclusive: Julian Casablancas Releases Phrazes For the Young!!!

The Smoking Section has the pleasure of telling the world that Julian Casablancas will release his debut solo album, Phrazes for the Young, this fall!

The Strokes singer and chief songwriter wrote and recorded Phrazes over the last year -- the eight songs on the disc include "River of Brake Lights," "Glass" and "Ludlow St." The album was produced by Jason Lader, who has previous worked with Jay-Z, Coldplay, Gwen Stefani and Justin Timberlake. Additional production came from Mike Mogis, the studio wizard in Bright Eyes.

In the past few years, while the Strokes have been on hiatus, guitarist Albert Hammond, Jr. released two solo records. Bassist Nikolai Fraiture -- as his alter ego, Nickel Eye -- went solo with last year's album, The Time of the Assassins. And drummer Fabrizio Moretti made an inceredible disc with his buddies in Little Joy. For the past few months, as we've told you, the Strokes have been cracking away, writing tunes together for their fourth album, and getting along better than ever.

Soon, Julian will announce some special U.S. dates to present Phrazes for the Young, and promises a solo tour for later this year.

And now go to check out the video on Julian's brand new website, launched today!

Yea this sounds like it will be a great. JC never got media respect for his genius. I think the strokes will put out the album next summer bs the solo tour will slow things down. One thing someone said earlier that worries me. You are right jules is 31 now and around 35 lou reed's voice wasnt good live ten years later even in studio is was a sad shell of what it once was. JC is THE best voice of our decade and ITI is THE best album of the oughties, maybe pfty will be the best solo work. watch out thom yorke

Im glad the strokes are making a fourth album

Julian C. | August 22, 2009 11:58 PM

Hey guys. The album (I think) is pretty decent. I put a few new sounds in there. Some songs kind of sound like a little bit like ABBA. When I was in the recording studio, we got it to sound just right.

Sincerely,
Julian Casablancas

Soundwave | August 22, 2009 11:49 PM

I hope this album turns good. I dont think hes taken his time as seriously as the other members of the strokes have since their "break". Now hes finally done something. Im not dissing him, I just think he could succeed more than any other member of the strokes solo if he buckled down.

John Dorian | August 22, 2009 7:18 PM

reply to "Peter" - Lou Reed was and is and amazing songwriter, and Julian is as well. You cannot compare the lyrical ability of songs which are considered classic, to something that's recently been put out. I'm almost positive you haven't heard the latter of The Strokes work, so your ignorant comments are as insignificant as you say this album is. :)

peter is a sad twat | August 20, 2009 12:46 PM

hows those sour grapes

Dannie111 | August 9, 2009 2:13 AM

If you go on Julians website he says that there is gonna be fourth strokes album. So no worries there:)

Anastácia | August 8, 2009 10:59 PM

i missed him some much that i just can't believe he's finally coming back *-*

DBC | August 6, 2009 9:35 PM

Are you guys kidding?? Honestly, have you heard the album?

I just can't wrap my head around Julian Casablancas & the concept of this album without giving it A LOT more time!!

I'm one of those people who thinks that, while music can grow on the listener, something about it has to grab you...and there's nothing about this that does me.

Gordon Raphael | July 31, 2009 7:26 PM

well this Julian record looks like its going to be outstanding and groundbreaking... you can tell by watching the preview! x

kayla | July 29, 2009 11:22 PM

omg! yay! i love the strokes and i cant wait!! but shit i want another strokes album!! haha love love

Kate | July 26, 2009 8:35 PM

Sweet sweet sweet!

Peter, who calls the Velvet Underground The Velvets? And second... fuck you...

Becky | July 23, 2009 1:29 PM

is this the same peter from the thrash hits website? because if it is then you're even more of a twat than i thought you were!Julian's music is fucking amazing and as for being "lyrically trivial" your so ignorant! you should attempt to actually listen to his lyrics or maybe you're just too stupid to understand them. i think this album's goin to be amazing and i'm glad that the people who decide to criticise it will miss the opportuntity of enjoying it. strokes are still writing 4th album it will be out early next year, it says on their website.

Heidi | July 22, 2009 9:09 AM

Nice one Jules. My friends and I are truly looking forward to the solo album. Good luck!

Katie | July 20, 2009 9:18 PM

I'm so enthused about this... oh, and that Peter guy's a total douchebag.

Victoria Rose from England | July 18, 2009 6:07 AM

Yay! Julian is so talented i bet the lyrics will be even more soul bearing than the strokes's! looking forward to that but i hope they tour manchester or england at least! xo

eazy | July 18, 2009 12:38 AM

two words' fuckin sweeeeet!!!

Roberto P. Gro | July 16, 2009 5:11 AM

It is going to be pretty interesting to see how julians music conbines with mike mogis style, because the strokes and bright eyes are not similar at all.

K. | July 15, 2009 11:35 PM

Peter, have you been drinking the haterade?

Katie from Omaha | July 15, 2009 7:16 PM

Hopefully this will be an epic album. I am totally for it, as long as it doesn't interfere with the new Strokes ablum/tour, which I would hope would be Julian's top priority.
I really liked his collaboration with Dangermouse and Sparklehorse, and that was sans the rest of the band, so I have high hopes for this solo project.

ALSO, I'm PUMPED that Mike Mogis is part of his project. Being from Omaha, I've seen my fair share of Mogis' work, and he is truly a genius. Conor might have been the lyrical genius behind Bright Eyes, but Mogis (and Nate Walcott, to be fair) definitely gave the music it's spark. So I can't wait to see the magic he instilled into Phrazes for the Young.

All in all, I'm very excited, but no where near as excited as I am for new Strokes! Congrats Julian!

h_e_n_r_y | July 15, 2009 1:33 PM

The way I see it:

Radiohead's Thom Yorke did the unthinkable in 2006 and released a [great] solo album.

In late 2007, Yorke and Radiohead released what is by far the best album of the decade.

So congrats, Jules. Looking forward to the next Strokes record being the best record of the 2010-2019!

[i Love ze strokes]

Peter | July 15, 2009 11:58 AM

Just what the world is waiting for. No one, understandably, cares about The Strokes, who turned out to be lyrically trivial and too cool for their own good, but we're supposed to give a crap that their lead singer's record is coming out? No one from their world gets it. The reason why The Velvets were great is brilliant songs with devastating sentiments. The Strokes took the attitude and the disaffection, but never really brought the songs. Say Goodnight Julian. You couldn't write Pale Blue Eyes or I'll Be Your Mirror if your very life depended on it.

garrett | July 15, 2009 8:41 AM

super excited to see this...although, i do wish that this would have come out about a year ago when the strokes werent supposed to be back together in the studio...but im sure they know what theyre doing. cant wait to hear it!

ben | July 15, 2009 7:37 AM

Can someone explain why we are being told the strokes are cracking down on their 4th when infact no they are either touring or releasing new albums.

Dispite the fact I feel like the 4th album should be the number one priority i hope this is realy good...

but come on strokes fans are always in the dark with information.

Whatever Happened? | July 15, 2009 4:27 AM

WTF! THIS IS TERRIBLE, it really looks like the end of the Strokes! This really makes me sad. Why would Julian release a solo album and tour when the band is supposed to be writing and recording their long awaited fourth album?????? I can understand the other Strokes solo projects but Julian is the Strokes and I know he is way too much of a perfectionists to release a collection of Stroke throwaways. Its probably better they end it this way than say, a band like Oasis, hands up! who wish they did not make another album after their third. I guess the next time we see The Strokes together it will be on their reunion tour that I'm sure Rolling Stone will be all over since it seems like thats their thing now. JULIAN THANKS FOR THE THREE EXCELLENT STROKES ALBUMS AND GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SOLO CAREER!!!!!

sarah | July 14, 2009 8:47 PM

omg, i am sooooooo glad. i love julian casablancas. idk why some of you guys are worried, veryone else in the band besides nick did a solo project and nothing bad happen.
lighten up people.
the strokes are my favorite band. and julian is my favorite man :D

Mikkelback | July 14, 2009 5:53 PM

I suppose the fork hath been stuck in the stroke.

Exclusive? | July 14, 2009 5:51 PM

Wow, so you both you and NME have the same exclusive... how is that possible?

Jude | July 14, 2009 5:45 PM

Why would he feel the need to release a solo album when he writes every song in The Strokes? Probably to be more adventurous and have a different sound, but that's what the Strokes need sometimes. He should have released two albums in back to back years under The Strokes to redeem the fact that fans have been waiting for close to four years now. I don't see this as being good news for the future of the band. It sounds like the end.

Rebecca | July 14, 2009 5:28 PM

I have A FAIRLY GOOD feeling about this solo project...Thank you Julian!

Jay | July 14, 2009 5:05 PM

Going to be epic im sure, but does this mean the strokes 4th album wont be out for another 3 years?

Andrew | July 14, 2009 4:27 PM

I hope Julian's voice hasn't died yet.

vonj88 | July 14, 2009 4:00 PM

Carlos | July 14, 2009 3:31 PM
