"D'arcy Pumpkin Ex" Resurfaces

July 15, 2009 10:25 AM

Smashing Pumpkins debut, Gish, is an awesome album. When we were thirteen years old, we played it constantly. We even liked some of the songs on Siamese Dream. Then they sucked.

Our favorite part about the Pumpkins, though, was D'arcy. It wasn't like we were obsessed or anything, we just found her extremely sexy. She plays bass, she's a hottie, and she was so mysterious -- she sang on "Daydream," but she never really said a word.

Then in the late Nineties she disappeared. Billy Corgan confirmed our suspicions when he later said that D'arcy had begun "a slow descent into insanity and/or drugs -- take your pick."

Well, D'arcy shed a little bit of light on where she's been when she phoned into the request line of Chicago radio station, Q101.

Apparently, she had heard a segment on Davy Jones of the Monkees, who was in the studio singing songs and taking questions. Because Jones is such a shrimp, he used to race horses. That must've tugged D'arcy's heartstrings because, as she says, "I live in Michigan on a horse farm."

D'arcy identified herself as "D'arcy Pumpkin Ex," and while she didn't sound totally batshit crazy, she came pretty friggin' close.

During the ten-minute chat with on-air personality Ryan Manno, she said:

-- On where she's been: "I hardly ever get off the farm... a lot of horse poop."
-- On the demands of being in a band: "It's like, the show must go on. The show must go on. Kurt [presumably Kurt Cobain] playing in his wheelchair... I just get sick too much. Twice a year I get laryngitis and lose my voice completely."
-- On Corgan's voice: "I really wish he'd pay attention to his pitch."
-- She tells a story about how Marilyn Manson's father had four rats, named Billy, D'arcy, James and Jimmy. "He named them after the Pumpkins!"
-- On her current state: "I'm a sociophobe."

Listen to the rambling interview here.

Be nice to D'arcy. Who wouldn't be crazy after putting up with Billy Corgan for all those years!? She never got her due credit (neither did James Iha) as being integral to the band. Billy does not seem to be doing very well without D'arcy or James. Hopefully she will make a cameo on the next Jimmy Chamberlin Complex album!!!
Wow, what a hot rhythm section they were!

I do agree she sounded kind of whack. I have a friend who talks just like her(you know, ramble about random stuff just for the sake of it), and insane doesn't even BEGIN to describe her, she is the most unpredictable person I know. I find it odd that someone who pulled a Greta Garbo on us nearly a decade ago all of sudden calls up a radio station just to chat with the DJ, when she doesn't have any new project to promote. And what's up with the bitching about wanting to go back to Chicago? What's stopping her? I assume she has enough money stashed aside from her days as a Pumpkin to move to another city/country anytime she feels like.
Maybe the smell of horse poop is getting to her brain. And I think her claim of being a sociophobe isn't a hyperbole, I think it's true. She clearly doesn't get out much, so I think moving back to the city would be a great thing for her sanity. I'm not a Corgan fan, but I think his claim that D'Arcy is going off her rocker is quite true (even though he's hardly any better himself). BTW, one thing I did like about the interview was her jab at Billy's vocal skills, (or lack thereof, I should say).

they are all pretty nice, especially considering they are blogspot blogs and not self-hosted kinds. if i had to pick the best one it'd have to be the first one the ljdesign logo...it's very unique and raw

The naysayers are right, Billy Corgan does have a Jesus parallel complex... Like Jesus, it's the guy and his message that were right on, it's his fans that give him a bad name.

Um, she sounded completely batshit crazy and/or fucked up on something. And Mellon Collie is classic, Gish is mediocre at best. My 2 cents.

to me, siamese dream is/was the smashing pumpkins....gish was an ok album, it is in dire need of a good reproducing.
mellon collie was the top of the downward slide. THAT album was overproduced, and just over the top bad.
as far d'rcy....i've heard worse. i'm gonna give her the benefit of the doubt, and let her ride on her having a bad day. it sounded like she has some mental health (her words) issues, and maybe she skipped her meds. i really hope things work out for her. i too was in love with her. cuz of her i always wanted a good looking girl to play bass with in my band. (sorry kim d). good luck d.

C'mon, Siamese Dream was a masterpiece, as was Gish and Mellon Collie. You're only pissed off at Siamese Dream because it through them into the mainstream...then EVERYONE liked them. Granted, I was only 7 when SD came out, but the same shit happened to Kings of Leon. Youth and Young Manhood is by far the best album they have. However, Only By The Night attracted all these lame fans. Fuck. That's music for ya.
