Meat Puppets Are Back, All Sewn Up

In the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone, out next week, we profile the Meat Puppets, who are currently kicking ass on the road, supporting their new album, Sewn Together. We spoke with the heart of the trio, brothers Cris and Curt Kirkwood, and we promise you, the story will blow your mind.

You all remember the Puppets, most likely from their star turn on Nirvana's Unplugged in New York. They were the long-haired dudes backing up Cobain and Grohl on "Oh Me," "Plateau" and "Lake of Fire." (All of those cuts were culled from the Puppets' 1984 masterpiece, Meat Puppets II.) Soon after sitting in on Unplugged, they released Too High To Die, and scored a big hit with "Backwater." Everything was cool.

But what seemed like good old rock & roll decadence turned dark very quickly, as bassist Cris Kirkwood descended into a hellish, decade-long bout to heroin. It probably should have killed him.

The Meat Puppets new album, Sewn Together, is a testament to the healing powers of rock.

It is truly amazing.

Please take a sec to check out the title track, below. If you listen to it three times we guarantee you'll be hooked.

Very few modern musical entities strive, and achieve the TRANSENDENT, this band tugs at god's hem and says, "Hey, we got their attention, now you talk to them." And they're kick ass survivors too, of and not of this space and time.

Love 'em. I randomly found out about the album's release due to the rubbish british over-exposure of vapid music, which totally manages to obviate bands like the MPs. Truely an awsesome band, wish I'd been born earlier (and been in the US) to see them in the day (you lucky, lucky bastards!)

Saw them BOTH nights in NY. Wowwwwwww. Dudes friggin kick ass. Being at a Meat Puppets show is like taking acid-they take you to space like it indescribable. Me and Cris are like totall bff nowadays, I've seen them four times meet him every time

I LOVE this album. And by the way, I just saw them in Washington d.c. And their live show is out of this world.

the meat puppets are possibly the most over looked band of the shitty 80's. as a college dj, i never missed a chance to play them whenever i could. 'out my way' will always be one of my faves.

exc1t3r | June 13, 2009 10:42 AM

definitely cool.

even better is the page they gave em in the magazine. heroin is a hell of a drug. as cliche as it is to back from, it really is great that cris was able to get out alive. not to mention make a great album. pretty rad.

Their best album since Forbidden Places......and it's not like Too High To Die or No Joke were bad albums, either.

Sewn Together is just *that* good!

It's great to have them back!

that whole album is really good. glad you're giving them the attention they deserve. i'm sure most people won't even know they're still around, assuming they knew who they were in the first place.

Yes, lots of textures -- I like, too
