We recently had the pleasure of welcoming the Vaselines into the Smoking Section. While they were in the U.S. on a recent tour, founding members Frances McKee and Eugene Kelly found time to drop by and play us three of their classics: "Molly's Lips," "Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam" and "Son of a Gun."

In the Eighties the Vaselines released two EPs, and in 1990 put out their one and only album, Dum-Dum. They found a fan in Kurt Cobain, who called the Vaselines his "most favorite songwriters in the world." Cobain named his daughter Frances after McKee, and Nirvana covered "Son of A Gun" and "Molly's Lips" on Incesticide and "Sunbeam" on Unplugged.

Sub Pop records just released Enter the Vaselines, which includes both EP and their '90 debut. Go check it out! And check out "Molly's Lips" above, and two more cuts after the jump.

i have the way of the vaselines...
i'm sure that this is worth the 10 bucks or whatever. this band oozes aural honesty... purity.

If I say they're good, then every one of you agrees with me, you're brainless just like me. By the way, i like Liberace too.

Pure and honest music. I think that's how Kurt was able to translate these songs into rock gems. They deliever what you expect without any pretense or diversion; straight forward and reinforced with each bar. Someone said it was like a nursery ryhme, and I'd agree whole-heartedly.

These songs are just beautiful. Frances' voice is a wonder on my ears. I love Nirvana but i really don't see how you can compare their covers to the Vaselines versions.

By the way, I made a mistake. She's Frances McKee, not Frances McKay. I'm sorry! For some reason, I always get her name wrong!

diversi....originali,grande interpretazione

I just picked up "Enter The Vaselines" and I was amazed at how good they were and still are. I have to say Francis McKay is terrific.

These songs only serve to prove Mr. Cobains genius. These songs suck but Kurdt was able to turn them into masterpieces!

mperrotti76 | June 4, 2009 3:45 PM

"sounds like a nursery song." Yeah. That's what I thought. Or like something you'd hear in church. Nirvana did these songs much better justice.

greg | June 4, 2009 3:24 AM

Really unremarkable. Kind of like...Nirvana.

Wow, I totally forgot about the Vaselines. Great to see and hear them again. Reminds me of smoking cigarettes behind the gym in high school with the rest of the trench coat crowd. In Kansas, nonetheless. Memories.

I think that "chic" is even more beautiful than Hedy Lamarr! She sings and plays guitar really well too.

mr.bummer | June 2, 2009 11:39 PM

so weegie, you just cruise message boards to rip on people or do you have an opinion on the s.s news? guess not. dumb CHIC like yourself probably doesn't have the required 2 brain cells to rub together to create an opinion.

weegie | June 2, 2009 11:20 PM

"The chick" ? Um hmmmm......is this 1975 ? Does Mr. Bummer drive a Chevy Van with a unicorn airbrushed on the side ?

she looks | June 2, 2009 10:42 PM

like cobain

mr.bummer | June 2, 2009 5:43 PM

wow, the chic looks like she'd rather be doing anything but play that song. so enthused! actually, it also seemed like a nursery sort of a song where they'd be in front of a bunch of kindergardeners.
its interesting news none the less.
