Photo: Bedder/GettyFor the first time in ages, the Strokes are back in New York, hard at work on album number four in their midtown studio. "We have three songs," Julian Casablancas tells the S.S., three weeks into the sessions. "I would say it's going great. We have a lot of work to do, though."
It's been more than three years since First Impressions of Earth, and what's helping the process is good vibes and honesty. "It feels like we're new," says Casablancas. "We didn't used to be honest — there would always be minifeuds over stupid shit. Now, if Nick [Valensi] and Fab [Moretti] or anyone are saying they like it fast or slow, we'll talk about it, as opposed to saying, 'Well, I never liked you sister.'"
Casablancas says that they've resisted jamming on old tunes; instead they're forging ahead. "Some of the new stuff has a Seventies vibe, like Thin Lizzy or Elvis Costello," he says. "But then some of it is bizarre music from the future that we're trying to tone down to sound catchy. So we're trapped between the future and the Seventies."

N8 the Gr8 | July 7, 2009 6:54 PM
so happy to hear that The Strokes are coming back!
does that mean a TOUR in the near future?
Nicholas Ellis | June 16, 2009 1:45 AM
The Strokes will always be the best rock band of this generation. Arctics are close though... KIngs Of Leon, never, fair dinkum, mate?
This album will once again forge the reputation of the best band since Led Zeppelin.
They never got credit for the new tones they brought to the guitar, such as the sounds in 12:51 or the end has no end. Nor how they blend two guitars and a bass together with the vocals- all speaking different melodies to the listener.
bring on album number four!
Anonymous | May 24, 2009 11:10 AM

Long life to Rock N' Roll!!
isthisit | May 14, 2009 3:10 AM
stop comparing them to Kings of Leon....those guys have ditched rock n roll and went straight pop mainstream its pretty sad...sell outs...strokes are gonna bring back rock once again
Jasmine Leaf | May 12, 2009 11:35 PM
Brilliant! I can't wait, I'm looking forward to this album like no other! I love you guys!
Julian Casablancas | May 12, 2009 6:20 PM
I said stay tuned motherfuckers. We're almost done.
Keithy Boy | April 29, 2009 12:34 AM
I don't understand why people criticize their work rate. Big bands, such as Coldplay, also go three years between records. It isn't completely unheard of.
And, naturally, I am fucking excited.
max | April 23, 2009 10:28 PM
ae...!
até qume enfim notícias sobre a tão esperada volta...!
espero que passe pelo Brasil novamente!
Boopadoo | April 20, 2009 4:13 AM
I don't think their album should be a mix any particular album(s). They've evolved so interestingly over 3 albums, and even though First Impressions of Earth had some filler songs in the middle, I liked the direction it was heading in. They'll always sound like the Strokes, but their music will grow as they do. I'm looking forward to seeing what they have in store for this album!!!
momo | April 15, 2009 7:39 AM

They've become irrelevant, in 10 years all of it save the debut is throwaway. No longer excited.
macca | March 30, 2009 10:18 PM
great news! though they'll have to struggle hard to recover their throne back from KOL. And they do sound great live, they're not oasis or Dylan who do suck live
dee | March 30, 2009 8:12 PM

The Strokes are my favorite band EVER!
I love every single song off of all three albums, including their b-sides. I so can't wait till it comes out :)
I know it's going to be amazing.
I love The Strokes and especially Julian Casablancas<33
E. | March 30, 2009 6:29 PM
I found a countdown to the band's fourth album on ripcordnews.com, so check that shit out.
dave | March 30, 2009 4:36 PM
i hope the album is better than first impressions, that record lagged way too hard in the middle after 'razorblade' and before 'ize of the world.'
ps.. whoever said they suck live is crazy, because my experience at hammerstein a few years back was incredible, they sounded so tight and just like the recordings
Daniel | March 30, 2009 3:54 PM
Why you guys dont cover a Lizzy song? Like Slow Blues from Vagabonds of the Western World? Would be nice
electricturf | March 30, 2009 2:17 PM
I've seen the future and it's the strokes. Listen to their albums on random repeatedly and you'll understand that the mixture of seventies and future sounds have always been prevalent in their music. Now that Jules has confirmed their goal I worship them even more and on will be on a strokes binge while waiting for their new album. I believe the strokes believe in synchronity, so it makes sense that their new album will drop in 2009. 2 + 9 = 11. No wonder they began working Feb "11"!! I predict their album will drop in nov. 11/11.
I've seen the future and it's not mayhem, or war, or terrorism. It's sedation, inebriation, sex and the Strokes. P.S. Julian sounds like a robot or mind control.
OMG | March 30, 2009 2:15 PM
:)

The Strokes will save the economy!
huh?wha? | March 29, 2009 8:35 PM
Loved their debut, and number two was good as well. That time has come and gone. The members have all got other projects at work except Julian, who has apparently made a career out of guest-vocal-ing. Why don't they just break up already, or at least retire the band's name? The Strokes died after album number three. I wonder how disappointing the next one will sound? Yet I remain interested and hopeful. I hope it's rock'n'roll they're making. Something propulsive that grooves like hell -- They can't go wrong that way. That's what's been missing for several years on the lame pop landscape. Time for a great band (great music) to announce itself. Strokes 2.0, maybe.
MonsieurLeStefan | March 29, 2009 6:33 PM
"So we're trapped between the future and the Seventies."
Sounds exactly like First Impressions of Earth.
Andrea | March 29, 2009 7:31 AM

Kan inte någon donera pengar till dessa stackars litauer så de kan sjunga glada sånger och få sina låtar inspelade i en studio istället för i garaget. :P
Yea | March 28, 2009 2:25 AM
Mixing the 70's and the future?
That's like mixing peanut butter and chocolat: instant classic
Can't wait :D
junnie | March 27, 2009 11:07 PM
yep. i'm happy.
mATTERgOD | March 27, 2009 9:59 PM
As a traditional classic rock kid, there has not been a whole lot of music I look forward to.PJ, Jack White's various contributions, KOL, and the Strokes. This is the best music news I've heard in two years since KOL is watered down now.
Can't wait for new Strokes to digest. They're the most melodic rock outfit of this generation. Good stuff!!!
Carolina | March 27, 2009 6:45 PM
I'm so exited!!!
DecentMusicBut | March 27, 2009 4:09 PM
These guys are terrible live. One of the worst acts I've ever seen of their caliber. Their CDs are very good though so I was shocked at how bad they suck live.
Hanan | March 27, 2009 4:05 PM
I just died and went to heaven.
Rolling Stone, you have redeemed yourself forever with these SS Strokes updates
