Exclusive: Wayne Coyne Tears Apart Arcade Fire!

March 4, 2009 6:49 PM

Photo: Koplaoff/FilmMagic (Coyne), Gershoff/WireImage(Butler)

Wow! We love Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. He's always been cool to us, and we appreciate the fact that he always speaks his mind. So, it wasn't a total shock to hear him tear the Arcade Fire a new asshole.

So, last week, our buddy and colleague Andy Greene is on the phone with the Coyne, when they started talking about some of the movers and shakers in the music world. They talked about Brian Eno, and Radiohead, and then got on the subject of Arcade Fire, which set Coyne off. (Just to clarify, Coyne is not comparing Eno to the Arcade Fire -- Eno was just a talking point.)

"I'm a fan of them on one level, but on another level I get really tired of their pompousness," says Coyne. "We've played some shows with them and they really treat people like shit. Whenever I've been around them, I've found that they not only treated their crew like shit, they treated the audience like shit. They treated everybody in their vicinity like shit. I thought, 'Who do they think they are?' I don't know why people put up with it. I wouldn't put up with it. I don't care if it's Arcade Fire or Brian Eno. If either of them walked into a room and treated people like shit I'd be like, 'Fuck you, get outta here.'

He continues, "People treat Arcade Fire like they're the greatest thing ever and they get away with it. Those sort of opinions change my view of their music. They have good tunes, but they're pricks, so fuck 'em. Who does Arcade Fire think they are? I've been around groups. I've been around the Edge from U2 and he's the fucking sweetest guy ever. I was around Justin Timberlake when he was young and he was just a normal, nice, kind person.  Anyone can be polite and kind and people who have the privilege and money and attention should understand that. If they don't, then fuck 'em."

Discuss.

UPDATE: Through their publicist, the Arcade Fire has declined to comment.

UPDATE #2: Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler has responded via his band's website. (Follow the link to Win's scrapbook.)

I love both the flaming lips and arcade fire. But i can see win acting like a prick, and wayne is amazing..... so..... good for u wayne!

ninja368 | October 17, 2009 5:27 AM

The Arcade Fire's music is both extremely pretentious, but also incredibly boring. Sorry, but it's true.

Anonymous | September 3, 2009 4:02 PM

lol

Fran | May 12, 2009 6:43 PM

Wayne, why the need to talk shit?

Can't we all just get along?

JK | March 18, 2009 6:30 PM

"yibble yabble ho ra"
Babble Babble.

I dunno.
Yes.
No.

These kinds of outbursts are pointless to debate.

Part of the shit of rock and roll.

Just f*** P.R.

WayneO | March 11, 2009 7:07 AM

I thought the Arcade Fire were pretty good when I saw them at Glastonbury in 07, but took offence at Mr Butler when he said "I've just come from an Irish Wedding that was more rowdy than this crowd".
Generally, Mr Butler, Irish weddings are quite rowdy affairs and standing in the heavy mud at Glasto waiting for your band to come on stage sometimes falls short of that.

All power to Mr Coyne, he calls it how he sees it.

mk | March 9, 2009 6:35 PM

incidentally, mr. coyne...in my humble opinion the history books--should they mention you at all-- will lump you in with arcade fire under the category of "lesser artists of the late 20th and early 21st century who were inspired by the work of the beatles and the velvet underground".

just in case you didn't know.

Steve | March 9, 2009 12:21 PM

This whole bashing 'Arcade Fire' thing kind of sums up Wayne Coyne's intellect. The world is falling apart right now and that's the most biting bit of social commentary he can dig up? Maybe he should focus on his stage puppets and rolling around in his giant see-through ball (yawn) and just keep trying really, really hard to be "weird". If anyone is overrated it's 'The Flaming Lips'. The Soft Bulletin is a very, very good album but doesn't even come close to touching Funeral. The Flaming Lips try to disguise their lack of depth by their ridiculously indulgent stage show. Concerts for those with ADD, which I'm quite sure Wayne Coyne probably suffers from by the way.

Lose | March 8, 2009 6:46 PM

Wait, his name is Win?!!!

Kliffee | March 8, 2009 6:44 PM

What Would Lemmy Do?

db | March 8, 2009 5:43 PM

Let me see here. Both of them are unique. But this nonsense is funny. They should just go write better songs and poor all this speaking bullshit into creativity.
...As far as Flaming Lips go, They have not done anything of late that is "classic". It's all just a bunch of slow moving crap! (Music For Movies).
And Arcade Fire's last effort was just luke warm at best! If Arcade Fire wants to put out music like that they should just become Springsteens backing band.
They both have started to believe their own hype! Let's get to work, both of you. Put out something that stimulates ones mind. Both have gotten lazy!

erik | March 8, 2009 5:24 PM

First. Both Flaming Lips and Arcade Fire have made Classic Albums. But that is it! Both have some great songs! But that is it.
Arcade Fires last effort (Neon Bible) has some great songs on it "Sounds More Like Springsteen". But it was not the classic "Neighborhood".
That is that! Wayne is O.K, Some of the songs he as written of late sound like some old lady wrote them. Arcade Fire traded in their sound on the last album, In my opinion Arcade Fire should have gone more "Classic Bowie" than Springsteen. But staying power is very important these days. The new U2 album (no like on the horizon) has them both beat!

Umm... | March 8, 2009 3:42 PM

... Arcade Fire sucks.

Mitch | March 8, 2009 2:13 PM

Arcade Fire >>>>>>>>>>>>> the Flaming Lips

Johnny B @ Los Angeles, California | March 8, 2009 4:44 AM

How can anyone throw disrespect in Wayne Coyne's direction?

Coyne is about as easy-going as it gets, and has no pretense about himself or his musical talent that makes him consider himself 'a breed apart' from the people that attend his shows, the people that work for him, the other artists he works with, or the venue that he works in.

He does, however, call it like he sees it. Especially with people who become cults of personality. This was the case with Beck, and as of a few days ago it became the case with Arcade Fire.

Win, Lord High Commander of Arcade Fire, fired back. He apparently takes issue with how limited Coyne's knowledge is of him and his bandmates and how the Fire and the Lips barely know each other, so Coyne has no right to be judgmental.

Coyne seems to be uninterested, both by his lack of response and the catagories that his criticism of Arcade Fire fell into.

This isn't about how the two bands jived together, and even less about the Wayne-Win vibe that surfaced when they met.

Coyne's ire seems keyed in on something beyond the two bands' nearly-nonexistent relationship. It's not about Arcade Fire's style or capacity. It's nothing about what they do on-stage. The force of the blow is directed towards what Win and his bandmates are doing and saying off-stage that's giving Coyne the itch.

It's been my experience that fashionable cynicism and in-crowd behavior are fairly embedded features of hipster culture. I suspect they're the qualities which Arcade Fire is brandishing proudly, streaming them like a brilliant flag up a ship's mast, that is giving Coyne an intolerable itch.

Scratch that itch, Wayne, and give these young men a hint that they're stomping too hard in the garden.

Over rated | March 8, 2009 2:59 AM

I'm tired of the Arcade Fire. I'm Canadian and we have a law that on public radio a certain percentage of songs have to be by Canadian artists. It's stupid socialist crap. So on our classic rock we get lots of Rush (fine by me)on rock we get Bryan Adams (whatever)and we always have to listen to Morissette and Furtado on the pop stations (better than Celine Dion I guess).

But then we get the college and alternative artists. Of course in Canada we think Montreal is the so cultural and European, so anything from there is considered high class. But I'd much rather listen to Radiohead or other great American or British bands. We get this Arcade Fire crap fed to us and everyone up here laps it up! Personally I think there are pretentious and boring. You can have them Americans...we'll take Neil Young back.

in Wayne we trust | March 7, 2009 9:28 PM

not those seedy pretensious canadians

Anonymous | March 7, 2009 9:23 PM

Liz,

I actually saw the LIPS at the state fair...

But, as far as this "feud" goes, I dunno.

I'm still disgusted by the story about Hannah Montana wanting to "ruin" Radiohead.

Today's secret word: Stupid

bababooey | March 7, 2009 9:08 PM

Radiohead are allowed to murder because they are better than everyone.

Wayne is the man | March 7, 2009 9:07 PM

Funeral was good but Neon Bible is gutteral crap, a 4th rate Springsteen ripoff.

And I saw them live in Kansas City and they were TERRIBLE.

arcade fire = lame | March 7, 2009 9:06 PM

those guys are tools.

Wayne is the man | March 7, 2009 9:01 PM

I liked Funeral but Neon Bible is garbage 4th rate Springsteen. I saw them with LCD soundsystem in Kansas City and they were TERRIBLE. Everyone fawns on their live show but they suck balls. Fuck Arcade fire and fuck win. Wayne is awesome.

choco | March 7, 2009 8:59 PM

he is right,

but radiohead is upper class, i wouldn't be surprised if one of the members actually commit murder...

arcade fire is so OLD STORY!

richardcheese | March 6, 2009 5:41 PM

The saddest part is that I'm actually rsponding and buying into this shite. RS is just perpetuating some gossip rag feud. I do like both bands, and did see the Lips New Years Eve- they were great, and Wayne was gracious, honest and funny.

St. Catherine | March 6, 2009 5:21 PM

I'm in Montreal right now and I'm going to go out onto St. Catherine (you know where that is Win) and punch someone in the face because Arcade Fire are such dicks!!!!!

Stan | March 6, 2009 4:39 PM

I dunno Wayne...KRAFT?!?

Faming Fire | March 6, 2009 4:28 PM

To be fair, both bands had created certified masterpieces. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots & The Soft Bolletin are prove of that. Funeral was a perfect debut, and its follow-up, Neon Bible, was also terrific. However, for some reason, Coyne has always been a charismatic figure who produce a feeling of trust. I'm not defending him for ditching AF, but I'm just saying if I was to believe somebody, that would be Coyne.

TXRHFan | March 6, 2009 4:09 PM

I have always loved both of these bands, but for what it's worth, lost a lot of respect for the Flaming Lips when they went around hawking Camel cigarettes on their tour a couple years ago. No telling what they'll do for publicity.

Anonymous | March 6, 2009 3:13 PM

Rollingstone you guys are a bunch of fucks. The Flaming Liups are popular so you pretend like you guys like them.

Don't think the true fans haven't forgotten your review of The Soft Bulletin

"Another baffling, winning, neopsychedelic recording."

Rollingstone is the true asshole.

RockDaddy | March 6, 2009 12:30 PM

You guys were set up.
This was all big nothing, to rile you up and set your computer keyboards a-flamin'!

You fell for it. Manipulated by the media again.

But hey, it's good publicity for both these bands, and keeps their name in the press.

And THAT, my friends, is what it's all about. This is a money-making business, and I'm certain that I just heard a "ka-CHING!"

Tom | March 6, 2009 12:05 PM

wait - in the Win Butler blog post, he starts by saying, "well, wait, the time we were jet lagged?" Totally cops to it it seems. Classic! "well, yes, we were dicks. But we were jet lagged.

Coyne is a classic, one of a kind gem. If you ever go to a Lips show, he's out there with the crew setting his own shit up. A no bullshit, no pretense, "get it done" kind of guy. He's awesome. Indie hipster bands can be, let's face it, a bunch of bitches. Right?

garseed | March 6, 2009 10:40 AM

i think if you talk shit on people you dont know very well, doesnt that make you pompous?

Fowlis Wester | March 6, 2009 9:19 AM

Wayne bums farm animals. Win owns a petting zoo. You see where this all started ?

kooz | March 6, 2009 12:23 AM

Lips have been here for almost 20 years for a reason.. they actually write songs!!! Arcade Fire's last record was recorded in a church....oooooohhhh..big fuckin deal..maybe they should have prayed for a melody..wayne is right ..I saw bono and edge get out of their cars and walk back up the loading dock to sign autographs and tell people to make sure they got in the right line so they would be "in the heart"..I'm sure THE FIRE dont give a shit as long as they keep getting told they're the next big thing. Until they arent.

billy | March 5, 2009 11:56 PM

mr hilarious, dont u mean ur neighbor probably blu a band mbr from ardade fire and TOLD u she dated one of them while running into her at the post office. To mention a.f. in the same sentence as radiohead is flippin ridiculous.

LizLemon | March 5, 2009 11:53 PM

Ew...Win needs a better copyeditor. Errors aplenty!

I find both bands musically great, but both are far too pretentious for me to love in any significant way.

And if they are assholes to their audiences seems rather irrelevant. Their audiences, largely, are a bunch of bland assholes themselves, and why I skip those sorts of shows.

I'd rather go to a state fair, frankly.

So...I guess it IS all relative!

Bangers-N-Mash | March 5, 2009 11:51 PM

Ehh.. I've seen both bands at pretty intimate venues, and I have to say I feel that they both gave the fans their moneys' worth. I feel like this is Wayne just speaking kind of frankly and off the cuff like he always does. With all the 'muthafuckers' he peppers into his language, I feel that his opinion of someone else will be a bit generalized.

I think it's probably more of a generational-musical clash.. anyone?

Flaming Wayne | March 5, 2009 10:09 PM

Wayne Coyne can eat a big fat dick! maybe they think they are the shit, maybe they have a right to think it - wayne coyne wishes that having a cool personality carried greater currency in the music business

brock_vond | March 5, 2009 9:34 PM

i've worked with one band, and met both of them. in my honest opinion, neither of them are that nice ...

this is a case of who is higher on the dung heap, as far as i'm concerned.

Rock and roll, gotta love it!

Shivering coward basket case | March 5, 2009 9:24 PM

Heard Acardes stuff. Heard the Lips stuff Arcade sucks Moose balls. No comparison. If they hate each other who the fuck cares?

Paradizzle | March 5, 2009 8:51 PM

I've known the band members of the Arcade Fire for a long time (pre-fame) and they are all extremely wonderful people. They most certainly don't feel above anybody; if anything, they've been bewildered by and uneasy with their success, which came pretty suddenly a few years ago.

The funny part is that when I went to visit those kids in Montreal, they picked me up at the airport and took me directly to a Yoshimi tour Flaming Lips show...

Gosh. This is silly.

I honestly love both bands, two of my favorites even, but I have to say during my last arcade fire show (Athens,OH) they were amazing. Win came down into the crowd and shook a bunch of hands and took a bunch of pictures, and I've respected him and his band even more ever since. Obviously this may not be very representative of the band, and they may in fact be huge pompous assholes in real life, but does it matter? they're absolutely amazing. One of the few bands of our generation that actually have some lasting power. But big ups to the flaming lips, as well. just keep in mind, we listen to certain music because we enjoy it, not necessarily because they are nice people.

All you guys on here suck | March 5, 2009 8:13 PM

Fuck all those bands, Wayne is a no talent hack, Win Butler is wanker but Bob Dylan is a god. And you all are a bunch of bitches.

Meow | March 5, 2009 7:55 PM

They`re from Montreal, what do you expect?

Wayne Coyne hasn't stolen anyone's basketball.

THE END.

Childs play! I like (not love) both bands. Lips a bit more but this is not news.

Gimmee Oasis vs. Blur back in the 90's!

Mike | March 5, 2009 6:00 PM

If this was Chris Brown and Kanye trashing themsleves all the so called "indie fans" will be laughing and mocking them.

The reality is that the Arcade Fire singer is as egocentric as Thom Yorke, pretentious freaks, this generation Michael Jackson's.

Just wait ten years people, you'll see.

Its all good | March 5, 2009 4:50 PM

Love both bands, both guys. They'll always rock. I'm glad that none of this really matters.

Unicorn | March 5, 2009 4:14 PM

Anyone who has met Wayne will agree that he's unusually genuine, warm and welcoming. I certainly don't think he's "hard to get a read on" - that's just non-sense. With that in mind, I have a hard time believing that Wayne is just pulling this out of thin air. He must have his reasons. I don't think he's "stirring the pot", I think he's simply not taking shit. And, frankly, I think he's earned the right to have that attitude. The Flaming Lips have been around long enough to prove their staying power and they've released at least one all-time classic (The Soft Bulletin), which would rank much higher than Funeral on the Important Record Scale.

I've never met Win and I've never seen them in concert, so I can't comment on their attitude, but it seems pretty easy for him to defend himself in this situation (although he never denied actually being a prick). However, if he goes around presenting himself poorly, which he seems to have done, this is the expected result. It's a basic life rule: if you don't treat people with respect, it will come back to haunt you.

og | March 5, 2009 3:45 PM

Arcade Fire a has been, hahaha. For all of you who seem not to have looked at a magazine in the past three years but find yourselves on RS somehow they came out with this album called Neon Bible in 2007, which happened to pretty consistently rate well with a multitude of publications, "indie snobs" and otherwise. They keep the spirit of everything sublime about Bowie, Talking Heads and U2 alive today with an endearingly ramshackle twist. Of course the Lips are just as vital and fascinating, but I can only take so much ignorant and diffident hating

benny | March 5, 2009 3:09 PM

man, if wayne coyne says it i'm sure it's true. i always loved the lips for their humility and their inspiring dyi-ness. wayne got where he is by paying his dues, over the course of 20 some-odd years. plus he's just a really genuine person. arcade fire always seemed the opposite to me--self-important and basically a major label indie band. their first record is full of disco beats and their second one of low-rent springsteen rip-offs. they only reached the status they did because of a fluke of timing--the indie blogosphere made them. but, really, it's all hype. they're nothing all that special. history will ask why anybody cared about the arcade fire, while if he gets his due, wayne's face should be on the rock and roll equivalent of mt. rushmore (that is, minus the blatant f-you to native americans that the actual mt. rushmore represents).

The Frustrations of The Space Man! | March 5, 2009 2:15 PM

I am really not surprised that wayne is annoyed at Win, in fact I am not surprised that Wayne isn't annoyed with every good songwriter. I mean lets face it, if you can only write songs about tangerines and robots, while everyone else is making important music. I think would frusterate anybody.

Come on Wayne just stick to making the Space Music.

pk | March 5, 2009 2:00 PM

Yeah thundercrotch these bands are really obscure. Whats it like under that rock anyway?

shite stirer | March 5, 2009 1:59 PM

You know who else treats their fans like shit? The Swell Season. I guess when you win an Oscar you can tell your fans to their face to fuck off before a show but still expect them to buy a durlap bag with your logo on it for $50. Right.

Thundercrotch | March 5, 2009 1:44 PM

I love it when a guy from a band I barely know gets angry with another guy from a band I've never heard of.

Who is mad at who from where about what?

(Yawn)

Anonymous | March 5, 2009 1:31 PM

Win Butler, if you are reading this, I think I speak on behalf of your "audience" when I say that we love you and don't think you treat us like shit at all. The one time I was lucky enough to see AF live was the single best show of my entire life.

Coyne is the one being the pompous prick here; likely he is realizing that he is becoming irrelevant and is looking to stir shit up with a band spewing out masterpieces like there is no tomorrow.

chip love | March 5, 2009 1:26 PM

i worked with both bands at Sasquatch Festival a couple years ago. the arcade fire rented their backline from the company i was working for. and if memory serves, the lips were on after them later that evening. anyway...the arcade fire were total dicks to everyone around them on stage. they had a negative, tired from too much travel, crappy vibe that they dished out to anyone in the vicinity. this was right when they were first getting the hype and i'm sure they were exhausted. but it's their job! nobody likes the jerk who comes to work all pissed off and prickish. at the same time they put on a pretty memorable and great show. also i didn't see that they treated their fans poorly. still...wayne was sooooo nice. soooo great. he was even loading the lips gear onto the truck. trust me...that never happens.

Wayne exposes his immaturity, Arade Fire handles the situation with grace and humility | March 5, 2009 12:10 PM

You don't see Win trash talking anyone do you? So who's the asshole here? Shame on you Wayne, you've lost my respect as a fan. So much for the phrase 'the older the wiser', Wayne has exposed himself as having the mentality of a elementary school yard bully.

mr hilarious | March 5, 2009 12:04 PM

Wayne Coyne needs to shut his mouth in the press and on stage. I dont care how many times you say George Bush dude, play your songs. The confetti is ok I guess. Im not a fan of the Arcade Fire but my neighbor "dated" one of the dudes one and off and went to a couple shows on tour etc. She said they were good dudes, hissy-fit free.

lawrence kansas | March 5, 2009 11:59 AM

i know wayne. he wouldnt make shit up like that if he didnt truly feel that way. he simply made a comment on how he feels about arcade fire. so what? he feels that way, some people dont.

i can also tell you from firsthand experience that the quote he said about beck is totally accurate. actually, wayne was being nice. beck is way worse than what wayne described.

JoDe | March 5, 2009 11:54 AM

What does it mean when Win says on his website that he's "sure" Wayne knows Justin Timberlake "intimately as well?" I think Wayne hates snarky kids that are full of themselves. It could be a legit complaint. I can see what he's saying. The real question is: Does this really make a story fit for Rolling Stone? US or People maybe but not my beloved RS.

dave | March 5, 2009 11:42 AM

just look at the photos above - it tells the story.

zampano | March 5, 2009 11:25 AM

I kind of undertand what Wayne's getting at.

The first Arcade gig I saw it was around the release of their first album and they were brilliant, one of the best gigs I was ever at.

But I've see them twice since then
and they've changed. They didn't engage with the crowd at all and barely acknowledged them.
It completely ruined the vibe in the place and they seriously appeared to be a band up their own ass.

A lot bands seem to think that not engaging with crowd is ok, but it ultimately affects the overall atmosphere and the connection the crowd have with the band. Kings of Leon are huge culprits of this and I have vowed never to see them again precisely because of this reason. With regards to Arcade Fire, whereas before I wouldn't thought twice going to one of their shows, now I'm a lot more hesitant.

Wayne is at the opposite end of the spectrum. The guy always engages with the crowd and knows how to really connect with the audience. He is blessed with a good deal of charisma but also shows a real love of performing and for the crowd. Their shows are always amazing and bring out real sense of community. Long Live the Flaming Lips!

Lewis | March 5, 2009 11:23 AM

When is "Yoshimi..." part 3 being released.

Yoshimi | March 5, 2009 11:04 AM

Hells yeah Wayne! Kudos for calling these little indie pop bitches exactly what they are. I can't believe this moron defends himself on the most pompous website I've ever seen. Each band member has their own "Scrapbook" or "Journal". Ooooo, how hip you guys are! But of course, one of them had to be in French. Not because the band is from Montreal, but because what pompous indie pop site would be complete without a little french, so we all know just how hip you are. And don't forget the recipe section! You've got to let us know how we all put crap in our bodies and our lives would be more complete if we had a more organic diet.

You suck Arcade Fire!

Don't listen to him | March 5, 2009 11:02 AM

This is coming from an admirer of both groups, but Wayne's a weird dude. I wouldn't put too much stock into these callings-out of other bands. At Lollapalooza in 2005 Win mingled amongst the crowd after their set, which I thought was quite the gesture.

Ishmail | March 5, 2009 9:09 AM

I'm a fan of both bands. But I think Wayne is trying to stir the pot and remain relevant. Flaming Lips are famous for being creative and daring (Fearless Freaks), but they've been performing the same set live for the last 5 plus years.

McBama | March 5, 2009 7:55 AM

Who the hell is arkade feuer?

eddie | March 5, 2009 6:43 AM

Yeah, wayne don't give a fuck, he'll publicly dog you if he thinks you deserve it. I'm looking at you Beck, AF, Verve.

Someone Else | March 5, 2009 4:58 AM

Like others, I've met members of Arcade Fire on several occassions over the last 5 years and I've always been stuck by one thing..they are genuine. As in genuine people and genuine music fans.

I've met grumpy tired (when is this tour going to end) Arcade Fire and experienced the dry humour of Mr Butler. I'm under no illusion that they are anything other than human and will have bad days at the office.

I suggest you ask some of the people who have worked closely with Arcade Fire what they are like. I've talked to touring members of the band and asked them about there experiences. All say roughly the same thing... Welcomed into the extended family, great set of people, very professional and feel that they get a better deal than the band because they get all the perks but none of the downsides (such as photo / press calls).

The Intl | March 5, 2009 3:44 AM

Guess what? You BOTH suck.

RSTU | March 5, 2009 3:04 AM

Michael,

Why wouldn't Win be extremely pissed off that the Neon Bible leaked early? Of course he went off, the band had their art stolen from them and then leaked for free. DUH.

I like both bands, but Win definitely made Wayne look foolish by his response. Coyne is going to do what he does. If you've ever had the opportunity to go to a lips concert you'll know Wayne usually babbles about random crap between songs. He says crazy stuff all the time.

His opinion doesn't change my feelings about AF.

PS: AF puts on an amazing live show!

Mikeadellic, Pensacola FL | March 5, 2009 2:49 AM

The only way to settle this is to a JAM OFF. Have a concert, preferably in the south(I'm from FL). Both the bands have the time to mellow out at the beach and rehearse. Meet at a set time at an amphitheater or arena. Sell tickets at a moderate price. All the proceeds go to a most notable charity of the winners choosing. JAM OFF BABY!!! Lets see who is truly the better band, not better people, because in the end we don't all want to get to know these people...JAM OFF

Bob Vila | March 5, 2009 2:15 AM

I'm a fan of both of those bands, and I've been a huge Flaming Lips fan for a long time. I have to say, I'm a little dissapointed Wayne would say something like that, even if he thought it was true. I do also feel, as someone else said, that Wayne tries a little too hard to have that philosophical and nice guy persona, it almost doesn't seem real. Then again I don't know him personally, but I love his music and lyrics, same as Arcade Fire, and I don't really expect anything else out of the bands than to play good music.

Amanda | March 5, 2009 12:15 AM

As a fan of both The Flaming Lips and Arcade Fire's music... I could care less either way who says what about whom. It's like were back in the halls of high school. They both have good music and that is enough for me.

Wes | March 4, 2009 11:41 PM

Arcade Fire = Has Been

One good album...how many years ago...Funeral...done!

Thom York | March 4, 2009 11:40 PM

Who cares, people like bands for the music not who they are or if they are a jerk off. Thats why its called "music" and not "personality".

helas | March 4, 2009 11:11 PM

Maybe Win just didn't like Wayne for some reason when they met....who knows. I will say that Wayne Coyne has seemed for a very long time like a really cool dude - intelligent, creative, kind, and more than willing to give props where they are due - so it seems unlikely that this talk is completely unwarranted. I am a fan of both FL and AF's music, but sadly enough it DOES make you think about the creators of the music you listen to when you hear something about them personally. Still, as one previous post mentioned, could be just a matter of different outlooks, different personalities. Most of us listeners are probably closer to Wayne in upbringing and (previous) socio-economic status than to Win, aye?

ROCK ON | March 4, 2009 10:49 PM

ARCADE FIRE IS GARBAGE. WAYNE COYNE IS THE MAN!!!

CF | March 4, 2009 10:40 PM

That's how we roll in Oklahoma. Call it like you see it Wayne, and don't take any shit off Canadians! Flaming Lips at the Zoo....still one of the best shows I've ever experienced.

Yoshimi | March 4, 2009 9:23 PM

Who the fuck is Arcade Fire? Are they some pompous-ass emo band? Never heard of 'em.

But the Flaming Lips are fucking awesome.

rockyracoon | March 4, 2009 8:40 PM

fuck wayne coyne. he's just pissed that the arcade fire have become more relevant than the flaming lips.

bpetersen | March 4, 2009 8:39 PM

im guessing they are jsut cracking under the pressure and stress from being so popular and playing so many shows. i lose my mind under stress too. makes you not yourself.

Non-Partisan Thought | March 4, 2009 8:27 PM

As neither a huge AF or FL fan, I'm getting the feeling that Arcade Fire are really nice people...off-stage. On-stage, I've seen them go into their uber-serious, intense artiste mode, which I'm guessing comes off as that "f*ck-you" attitude that Wayne is picking up on.

For someone like Wayne, who's truly paid his dues and treats every minute of his life like a grand party for which he is eternally grateful for, to see these young pups acting all tough and serious onstage is probably what's eating him.

Arsalan from Montreal | March 4, 2009 7:45 PM

The redhead bassist from AF was a regular customer at a smoothie bar I worked in. He sure was fond of smiling.

James | March 4, 2009 7:34 PM

Erm, unless of course this took place in an interview scenario, in which case I think Coyne shouldn't go shooting his mouth off quite so much!

do you realize | March 4, 2009 7:34 PM

Love both bands, but Coyne has a tendency to put his foot in his mouth. At lollapalooza 2006 Coyne ranted about his hate for Israel, which truly offended me. clearly the man doesn't always think before he speaks and for that matter doesn't always have all the information needed to make grandiose comments. Wayne just simply needs to learn the art of filtering, maybe a publicist would help!!!

James | March 4, 2009 7:16 PM

At different points in my life I've loved both the Flaming Lips and Arcade Fire, so it's not particularly nice to hear Coyne pummel the 'Fire.

However, isn't this essentially reprinting what seems (I say seems) like a private conversation? Which is, sort of, morally reprehensible behaviour more akin to that of a UK tabloid than an established and globally-respected music publication...?

Furthermore, all it's going to do is upset earnest, shouldn't-really-care-because-what's-it-got-to-do-with-them-anyway music fans (ahem) while embarrassing both parties? I mean, seriously, you guys.

Anonymous | March 4, 2009 6:30 PM

honestly, who cares what wayne coyne thinks of the arcade fire

Shivar Descrescendo | March 4, 2009 6:16 PM

I think that, to a large degree, it comes down to a matter of personality type. Wayne is a working class guy, raised in Oklahoma and dropped out of high school. Yeah, he worked at Long John's for 12 years and sold pot out of his apartment, but he did it to fuel the Lips.

Win is a prep school graduate who attended an Ivy League and moved to Canada out of vogue and disinterest in the United States. I'm not dissing him to friends or fans, because I like his music, but it is kind of the same as if you compared Maynard James Keenan to Ezra Koenig. Equally intelligent, but perspective a world apart.

Tommy Atkins | March 4, 2009 5:45 PM

Win Butler is one of the only musicians to ever come into the audience after a show and walk up to me and shake my hand and thank me for coming; and, that was not at a club where I was down in front--it was at Lollapalooza when I was about thirty rows back. In my experience, then, the band doesn't treat its audiences like shit. I've also seen the band do an acoustic set in the lobby of a venue right in the middle of a throng of fans, which also goes a long way toward building a positive bond with an audience. Perhaps Mr. Coyne is just sad that someone other than his increasingly irrelevant band is being recognized for innovation and interactions with fans. I've been a Flaming Lips fan for 20 years, and I've seen Coyne & Co. do plenty of fan-friendly things, but perhaps there is also something to be said about playing music with a minimum of overzealous gimmickry.

Anon | March 4, 2009 5:42 PM

I agree with Wayne as I have heard many other musicians and press call out AF about their pompousness. They act like they're on a pedestal, sure they have bad days, but so does everyone else.

I have also met Wayne and dude is the sweetest guy ever, he's been around and is diplomatic with the press. He's not gonna spew shit for the sake of nothing, what he's going to say will be truthful.

M2 | March 4, 2009 5:11 PM

Of the interactions with Wayne Coyne that I've experienced, he's one of the nicest and most honest musicians I've ever met. Period.

He is quirky but genuine. His friendliness is no act ... heck, he's been this way for decades. And he's definitely entitled to his opinion. He's got a little ornriness in him, but that's because he's Okie. So am I. If Beck bitched during a tour, I'd rassle in a few practicle jokes to lighten the mood, too. Way to go, Wayne!

As for Arcade Fire ...

If I was Wayne, I'd pull out those huge green Hulk hands and challenge Arcade Fire to a boxing match. Settle that score once and for all.

;-)

Spidey | March 4, 2009 5:07 PM

What a load of complete rubbish! I've been lucky enough to meet Win and the rest of the band a few times, and they are THE NICEST, most humble and genuine people you could meet. I could say more, but it would sound like I'm bragging, and I'm not, but seriously Wayne's comments couldn't be more off the mark if he tried.

Win | March 4, 2009 5:04 PM

Coyne's just pissed I beat him 1v1 in basketball.

MrJM | March 4, 2009 4:20 PM

If Wayne says "Fuck 'em",
then they deserve fuckin'.

Michael | March 4, 2009 4:14 PM

Win Butler Came out before a show on the LCD Soundsystem/Arcade Fire tour. Signed my ticket and other items for all of us who were waiting to see the show. Now, I don't go to many concerts, but that is the only time a band member has done that for me. I can't speak for how he treats his crew, but as far as treating the audience well, I can personally rebuke Coyne's claims that he treats the audience like shit all the time. That said, this isn't the first time when I've heard of Win Butler acting like a prick. I remember his bitching and moaning when someone at iTunes released the wrong song early shortly before the release of Neon Bible. and his whiny little rants about the album leaking early were unflattering. Hopefully Coyne calling him out on his attitude humbles Mr. Butler. Like Coyne, that kind of thing makes me hear the music differently.

Jay | March 4, 2009 4:12 PM

I don't know how it works in New Foundland but you can get killed for dissing other rappers here in the states. Once, a rapper cut off a guy's whole body and just left the dick behind. In the end he was nothing but a dick.

Bewildered | March 4, 2009 4:10 PM

I'm sorry, but Wayne Coyne has got this all WRONG as most people have already said in their comments.

Coyne Wayne | March 4, 2009 4:08 PM

You got it all backwards. That's the truth of it.

Flaming Arcade | March 4, 2009 3:48 PM

Maybe arcade fire was just having a bad day...Wayne is pretty awesome and emotionally intelligent though. I don't see him spouting off total bullshit that he knows will get heard. that's for bill o'reilly.

Felipe | March 4, 2009 3:45 PM

Wayne Coyne FTW [2]

suzylee | March 4, 2009 3:28 PM

i honestly can't see how he would think this about AF. its a little mind blowing.

Oh No | March 4, 2009 3:15 PM

I just hope this doesn't turn into another East Coast/West Coast beef

a fan of both bands... | March 4, 2009 3:02 PM

WTF Wayne?

i'm sorry... but i've had the great pleasure of meeting and hanging out with the members of Arcade Fire on various occasions over the last 5 years, and I will tell you straight up they are some of the nicest people i've ever met, "famous musicians" or not, they are just truly good people, every single one of them. I won't name names, but some of the members have reached out to me way more than I would have ever expected given my position, and for that, despite that I love their music, will always mean a lot to me.

Win might just be fairly misunderstood and people maybe don't get his dry sarcastic sense of humor, but that doesn't mean he's an asshole (takes one to know one anyway) either.

maybe i'm oversharing, but I've witnessed first hand how well they treat their crew at an end of tour celebration in Berkeley in '07. I can't say that i've experienced anything else like that with other bands in the past (gifts, accolades, huge cheers, great speeches about how much they truly mean to the band, etc.)

Now i've also had the pleasure of meeting Wayne on two different occasions, and yes he was SUPER super nice... but to the point that it almost seemed like a put on too. Just ask Beck about Wayne, you might get a different perspective than he puts forth to his fans publicly...

pink flamingo | March 4, 2009 3:02 PM

I've been to loads and loads of AF shows and every single time, I felt they appreciated being there, performing and present with the crowd. And side stage, their crew was always smiling or singing along to their songs.....hmmmmm looks like someone needs to bring down another to feel better about themselves.

Anonymous | March 4, 2009 2:17 PM

Dude, are we seriously talking about the same Arcade Fire...?

Weird.

This does not jive with my experience of either Arcade Fire or U2.
