Wilco teaming up with Feist

Yes, please.

So, as we told ya already, we were in the Wilco's clubhouse in Chicago, The Loft, last Tuesday, and we heard six killer new Wilco tracks. Check out the story in the new issue, with U2 on the cover. (Our buddy Brian Hiatt wrote a great U2 piece, so check that out, for sure.)

It was the first time that Jeff Tweedy had spoken at length about the album and, as you might imagine, it was difficult for him to elaborate.

"I'm sitting here trying to figure out what the record is about," he told us, sitting around their kitchen table. "This is the first time I've had to talk about it so it's a pretty uncomfortable situation. I'm more uncomfortable than I thought I would be. I really love the record and I'm really proud of it but I'm not at the point where I know how to talk about it. I'm still in the part of my mind that is, if I could tell you about it then I wouldn't have even made it. I just want you to hear it."

That said, Tweedy was as open as he could have been about the writing and recording process. But at the end of our interview we asked him if there were any important topics that we didn't cover.

"I'm sure there are going to be glaring omissions from this conversation," he says. "Like, oh yeah, I forgot to tell you that Ravi Shankar came by and laid down some stuff."

It was probably premature for Tweedy to speak about it, but we got wind that two days after we left The Loft, Feist came in and sang on a Wilco track! The results, we hear, are stupendous!

That'd be cool, huh?

Last time we spoke to Feist she told us she was taking a healthy break from the music industry. But, who could turn down an offer to play with Wilco. You'd have to be a total jackass.

UPDATE: We spoke with our contact inside The Loft, who told us that Feist came in last Thursday to sing on a new song called "You and I." (The song was written by Wilco.) Feist and the dudes in Wilco met at the Grammys last year, and she hit it off with everyone. She's a Wilco fan, and the guys love her music, so they've kept in touch over the past year.

Mr. Tweedy is a huge fan of duets, and wanted to work a duet into the new album. Feist was their first call.

Everyone who's heard the song has been "blown away."

Yes!!!!!!!!

Manchester Orchestra Are Our Friends

We are seriously digging Mean Everything To Nothing, the new album by Manchester Orchestra (out in April).

This is the third album by the quintet, who hail from Atlanta and are led by singer Andy Hull.

Check out "I've Got Friends," below.

Kings On Fire

Is there a hotter band in the world than Kings of Leon?

We just got back from Nashville where we spent time with the Followill's for a BIG story in Rolling Stone. We cruised around in Matthew's new Corvette. Caleb made us a delicious dinner. We kicked it with Jared at his place and played some golf with Nathan. We spoke with their friends and relatives.

Forget everything you thought you knew about the Kings -- the real story of their childhoods and their rise to fame is going to blow your minds!

And get this: in two weeks we're flying down to Australia to hook up with them again for a week in Sydney!

Look for the feature in the mag in April!

Graduate with a Degree in Beatles

If this were around back in the day then we may have gone to college!

The Liverpool Hope University will begin offering students the chance to get their Masters degree in the subject of...  the Beatles! The course will apparently have a particular focus on how the Beatles and their music impacted Liverpool. Everything from the clothes they wore to their peace efforts will be covered.

Course leader Mike Brocken said in an interview with the BBC that he thinks this is the first program of its kind to be offered to graduate students. "There have been over 8,000 books about the Beatles but there has never been serious academic study,” he said. "The Beatles influenced so much of society, not just with their music, but also with fashion from their collar-less jackets to their psychedelic clothes."

But don't expect to learn a few random facts and walk away a graduate; a degree in Beatles requires just as much time and effort as other graduate programs. Students are expected to take on four 12-week sessions and complete a dissertation.

Then you could apply that knowledge to...... (we have no idea).

Dr. Feelgood Turns Twenty!

March 3, 2009 1:06 PM

Motley Crue will once again venture into the festival circuit this summer -- they just announced dates for the second annual Crue Fest.

And the theme of these summer gigs is their classic album, Dr. Feelgood, which the Crue released twenty years ago (in September).

Motley Crue will play the album from beginning to end at every stop on the tour.

That album has some sentimental value for the Smoking Section. Not only was it one of the first albums we ever bought (we were ten years old) but that power ballad "Without You" was "our song" with our very first girlfriend, Sarah.

Takes us back!
