A few days ago we posted this exclusive track, "Kind of a Girl", the first single from the generation-spanning supergroup Tinted Windows, featuring Taylor Hanson, Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger, James Iha and Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos.

The response has been overwhelming. Hundreds and hundreds of positive comments have piled up, most of them coming from hardcore Hanson fans.

So, here's a treat for all of you. Yesterday we spoke with our old buddy Taylor, who told us all about the history of the Tinted Windows, the future of Hanson and the fact that he has FOUR children!

Norah Jones Update

February 27, 2009 12:28 PM

Photo: Shearer/WireImage

We just got off the phone with the lovely Norah Jones. We had a little chat about the amazing version of "Baby it's Cold Outside" that she recently recorded with her hero, Willie Nelson, that will be featured on Willie's upcoming standards record.

On this unseasonably warm day in New York, Jones has all of her windows open, and is blasting a Bollywood compilation. It's been two years since her last album, Not Too Late, and though she told us she's been busy writing songs, she hasn't felt any real inspiration to lay them down. "I'm just hangin' out," she told us.

She also told us about a new man in her life, Ralph.

He's a fluffy little dog.

Jane's Addiction Open Up "Cabinet of Curiosities"

We're stoked that Jane's Addiction are back together, especially since their original bass player Eric Avery is back in the fold. It's easy to tell when you listen to those old albums that Avery's riffs were responsible for some of their greatest songs. That dude doesn't get enough credit. Right? Exactly.

To coincide with their upcoming tour and album, Jane's will release a 3 CD+DVD box set, Cabinet of Curiosities, on April 21st. The box set comes loaded with over 40 rare cuts, including demos, live recordings and other rarities.

Here's a rundown of what to expect when you open up the Cabinet of Curiosities:

  • The first disc contains 13 unreleased recordings, including "Jane Says," "Three Days," "Ocean Size," "Classic Girl," "Summertime Rolls" and "Stop!" There are also five songs pulled from a 1986 recording session in Venice Beach.
  • The second disc has more unreleased demos ("Ted, Just Admit It..."), including a remix of "Been Caught Stealing," and covers like Grateful Dead's "Ripple", Sly's "Dont Call Me Nigger, Whitey" (with Ice T), Zep's "Whole Lotta Love," the Stooges' "1970," and "Bobhaus," an old live staple that puts Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" lyrics over the music of Bauhaus' "Burning from the Inside."
  • Disc number three contains the entire recording of the December 19, 1990 performance at the Hollywood Palladium, with a killer version of "Whores."
  • The DVD included in the box set features eight music videos, three performances from shows played in 1990 and home videos of the band members.
  • Concert fliers, ticket stubs and set lists.

A Black Key Teams Up With A My Morning Jacket!

February 26, 2009 11:51 AM

Black Keys guitarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach has recently released a killer solo disc, Keep It Hid, and he's just days away from embarking on a 10-city solo tour!

Backing Auerbach during his sets is the awesome Texas band Hacienda (who will also open the shows), who we introduced you to a few months ago.

The bummer is that, due to a death in his family, drummer Bob Cesare won't be making the trek with Auerbach. In his place, though, will be My Morning Jacket monster Patrick Hallahan. (The last time we saw Patrick he was ecstatically spinning around in circles at the Silent Disco at Bonnaroo, but we're sure he's recovered from that!)

We Love: The Features

February 25, 2009 11:13 AM

If you're not yet hip to them, the Features are the Nashville-based rock quartet who made a splash scene back in 2006 with their killer debut, Exhibit A. That year they went on tour with fellow Tennesseans the Kings of Leon, and played gigs with  the Raconteurs and the Walkmen

The Features are back with their second LP, Some Kind of Salvation. The record will be released on May 26th, and features production work by KOL and Tom Waits producer Jacquire King.

Check out the Salvation track "Lions," below and head over to their website for more.

The S.S. Gets the First Listen To New Wilco Album

February 25, 2009 10:47 AM

Photo: Shearer/WireImage

Sure, we didn't put up any new posts yesterday, but we have a damn good excuse.

We were hangin' with Wilco!!!

Tuesday morning we flew to Chicago, hopped in a cab and headed straight for the Loft, the band's studio on the North Side. We listened to seven tracks, all of which are slated for the new album (no title as of yet), including "Wilco, The Song," "Deeper Down," "My Country Has Disappeared" and "Sunny Feeling."

We can't give away everything, or else our magazine editors will be pissed, but here's a couple tidbits:

In a blast of creativity, most of the basic tracks were recorded in January, in New Zealand. The majority of the band -- Jeff Tweedy, bassist John Stirratt, multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone and drummer Glenn Kotche -- traveled down there in December to play on tracks for an upcoming Neil Finn album that will benefit Oxfam. They got a great vibe from Finn's studio in Auckland, so they stuck around and nailed the tracks. Producer/engineer/mixer Jim Scott is at the helm. He's worked with everyone under the sun, and Wilco fans know him as the mixing engineer on Summerteeth, Sky Blue Sky and Being There. Master guitarist Nels Cline, and keyboard wiz Mikael Jorgensen added tasty overdubs at the Loft.

Finally, let's just say the record is sick! When we heard Wilco debut the song "One Wing" at Lollapalooza last year, we predicted that the band was consciously moving in a more experimental direction (a la Yankee Hotel Foxtrot), but the songs we heard at the Loft take Wilco in yet another new direction. Great melodies, great lyrics, great playing and great sounds. You're gonna dig it!

Update: Wilco album out in June.

Brandon Flowers' Hot Remix For Starsailor

February 23, 2009 3:21 PM

Photo: Kravitz/FilmMagic

As we understand it, this is how it all went down.

1. Brandon Flowers is a fan of the British rock group Starsailor.
2. Flowers teams up with Killers producer Stuart Price to remix the Starsailor tune, "Tell Me It's Not Over," laying down some vocals on the chorus.
3. Everybody loves it, except for some label bigwig who wants to halt its release.
4. It leaks onto the interwebs.

Unreleased Beatles Take on "Revolution" Hits the Web

February 23, 2009 2:01 PM

An unreleased Beatles tune has popped up on the internet, and it's pretty cool.

The nearly 11-minute track is apparently "Take 20" of the White Album's "Revolution 1." It starts off with studio chatter, including a high-pitched John Lennon saying, "Take your knickers off and let's go," before it goes into a  a take on "Revolution 1." Around the five-minute mark the song takes an unexpected turn toward "Revolution 9" territory, using tape loops, voice distortion and samples.

"Take 20" ends with some heady conversation between Lennon and Yoko Ono, something about being naked and how things are "going to be alright."

The Strokes Reunion Off to a Good Start

February 23, 2009 1:35 PM

Our buddy, Matt Romano, who plays drums in Little Joy and in Albert Hammond, Jr.'s band, just opened an amazing bar in New York City. It's called the Cabin Down Below -- it's literally under Niagara -- but it's only accessible through a secret door in an East Village pizza parlor.

We partied there on Saturday night and Sunday morning and we saw some old friends like Little Joy leader and Strokes drummer Fab Moretti. Just about two weeks ago the Strokes reunited in New York to begin writing their fourth album. And though the details of what Fab told us are a bit hazy, the gist is that the process is going well. With everyone's input they have strong ideas for ten songs. (Focused, they've resisted any urges to jam on old stuff). But don't expect an album too soon. And they won't tour without at least a pocketful of new songs.

P.S. We also ran into Ryan, who manages the Strokes, who told us he's now working with School of Seven Bells, the awesome trio featuring Benjamin Curtis from Secret Machines and the stunning twins, Alejandra and Claudia Deheza.

If you haven't heard them, check out "Half Asleep," from their '08 debut LP, Alpinisms

The Smoking Section Presents: Tinted Windows

February 23, 2009 10:31 AM

Yes, only at the S.S. will you find the first single from Tinted Windows, the new supergroup featuring Taylor Hanson, James Iha, Adam Schlesinger and Bun E. Carlos.

It's called "Kind of a Girl," and will be featured on the Windows' self-titled debut album, dropping on April 21st.

The initial spark for Tinted Windows occurred in the mid-Nineties, when Taylor and Adam (from Fountains of Wayne) first crossed paths. "Ever since we met, Taylor and I had talked about trying to do something together," says Adam, who has also worked closely with Iha over the years. The trio eventually bonded over power-pop, rock and New Wave. "We talked about everything from the Buzzcocks to the Knack," says Iha. "And, of course, Cheap Trick." On a whim they invited Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos into the mix, and he said yes!

So here ya go.

Tell us what you think!
