Allman Brothers Band Return To the Beacon To Toast Skydog!!!

After the Allman Brothers Band flaked out on last year's installment of their annual residency at New York's Beacon Theatre (with a good excuse, frontman Greg Allman was recovering from Hepatitis C), the band has announced they will return to the venue in March!

The ten-date run at the Beacon will kickstart March 9th. Since 1989, the Allmans have played the theater more than 175 times.

"I'd love to tell you what we have planned," Gregg Allman told Billboard, "but it's just kick-ass, that's all I can tell you."

Well, the Smoking Section can tell you a little more. It seems that the gigs -- which celebrate the Allmans' 40 year anniversary -- will be billed as tributes to Duane "Skydog" Allman, the band's legendary guitarist, who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1971, weeks before his 25th birthday.

Special guests like Boz Scaggs (Duane tore shit up on his 1969 epic "Loan Me A Dime") and Eric Clapton (who teamed with Skydog for Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs) will almost certainly be on hand. Also, look out for Dickey Betts to rejoin his old band!

And there ya go.

UPDATE: ABB's manager calls the Dickey Betts prediction "categorically untrue," and rumors of Clapton "premature."

Richard Betts back with the brothers would be gold for this run all about Duane Allman so many know Mr.Betts was faxed fired from the band but also loves Duane and named his son after Duane. If Mr. Betts can put it all behine him then its a go, as far as the Clapton rumor hope it does happen it is well deserved.

Guys,
I'm a big Dickey fan, longtime ABB fan (Dickey is a big reason why). I've seen his solo shows for years and it's been hit and miss for the last a few years now. I've seen him play well, and I've seen him so trashed he could barely speak, let alone play. If he could commit to doing what it takes to contribute (being sober, learning new/old music, working hard-these guys work hard to put on the best show they can, rehersals etc....) it would be a treat for all of us to see him back with ABB, even for just a night or two.
Everybody deserves another chance. I saw Gregg dog it for years (basicall passed out at the keys while Dickey carried shows)he turned his life around and is now a treat to watch. Perhaps Dickey could do the same

Saw Dickie last yr, he was still VERY Good! Your nuts if you think he sucks. I have never and will NEVER see the Allmans without him! They don't even sound like the Allmans without Dickie. (Seen the video) Love warren, and Derek is a good player, but tahts not the ALLMANS.

Only acceptable lineup:Dickie,Warren,Greg,Jamoie,Butch,Oteil. or Dan Toler instead of Warren, otherwise, not interested!

Doubt it will happen the other three really dont like Dickie.

I've seen Dickey play 3 times in the last 5 years and he's been great every time.

There is absolutely no way Dickey Betts will be rejoining the ABB for these or any other shows. He was fired. End of story.

Dickey may just be there...he's got a couple of dates open that coincide with their first couple of nights...before he goes out midwest.
The comments that he's a "trainwreck" are baseless. His playing at the Barcelona show last year was possibly his best I've seen since his days with the Allmans.
He's not quite Dickey of '94, but that has much more to do with being 65 years old than having lost it in some way. In rock and roll, nobody plays like they did at 20 or 30, or even 50..when their 65. Go Dickey, the most unique of guitarists.
Now the Clapton thing is something that's had to happen for a long time.

no dickey - no way. clapton's a myth.

If any of you have seen Dickie play in the last 5 years you would beg him not to set foot on the stage. He is a train wreck.

Are you seriously reporting that your own FATHER will be a guest without even mentioning the family connection? Gimme a frickin' break.
