The Best Song In the World

November 20, 2008 11:31 AM

Need we say more?

Check out this amazing track, "The Mountain," from the Heartless Bastards

Erika Wennerstrom is the genius behind the Bastards, which she formed a few years back in Ohio. She recently moved to Austin, Texas, where she recorded an album (also called The Mountain) with producer Mike McCarthy, who's done amazing work with Trail of Dead and Spoon. The album is out next February, but dig this in the meantime.

"Well, thank you," Erika said in her southern drawl, when we called her this afternoon to tell her how much we loved the song. "I'm really happy with how that one came out."

The tribute to the best song in the world is better than this, so this certainly can't be the one.

They just started playing this on the radio down here in Louisville on WFPK. They are good for representing the local talent. The 2nd listen hooked me hard too, and I've been jonesin' hard to hear it again, and again. Glad I found it here to get my fix, but I'll be paying up when they do release.

beautiful, but for me it can't beat the band... sorry, that's true bluesy americana at it's finest (which is how i would describe this song)

The new drummer is a great addition. He f'n rocks as hard as she does...

Anonymous | January 2, 2009 1:41 AM

wow, she looks different. HOT. Music is perfect. what do they put in the water in texas???

i thought nothing could beat new resolution but this does.

go to their myspace an listen to it

if the rest of this record is this good, i think they are finally going to get the recognition they deserve. is this a new band? other dudes were kind of doofy if i remember saw them with hold steady and none of them looked like this.

oh btw- i read recently in an interview this is about capitalism, china owning our ass.

I use to hangout with Erica in Dayton when she knew three cords on the guitar and had two unfinished songs, she is truly an awesome chic!

rockin rob | December 17, 2008 6:35 PM

this song and this band kicks ass.

Lucky Guy | December 8, 2008 3:13 PM

I saw them play last month in Iowa City for 30 people. Top 5 live performance I've ever seen. My guess is the next time I see them, there will be a few more people. Or I will have completely lost faith in the public's musical taste.

rockin' song and phenominal slide guitar...is that erika too?

knokd | November 24, 2008 6:22 PM

killer tune from a killer upcoming band-if this is indicative of what has been recorded, then i can't wait for the rest of the album.

bob | November 23, 2008 1:23 PM

Get another guitar player and then this band will really soar. And not some Texan douche - get one from Ohio where they remain forever original. F Texas.

pabst smear | November 21, 2008 9:42 PM

by far one of the greatest songs i've heard in a very long time. one of the greatest bands i've heard in a while as well. i've been so jaded on music the past few years and these guys will be the ones to break me of it.
i think it's wonderful to hear an "up and coming" female singer that isn't whiney like the rest of 'em.

tremelo | November 21, 2008 8:56 PM

a song and a band like this gives me hope that there is a future for rock and roll

scootch | November 21, 2008 6:38 PM

hellya! spacey, catchy, bluesy, rockin' stuff. i want more

bluzyriff | November 21, 2008 6:23 PM

this is the future of american blues. erica is how old? she must possess the soul of howlin' wolf. after hearing this song, i found them on youtube. i must see them live.

biffle | November 21, 2008 4:57 PM

i discovered this band a few months ago. i drove from knoxville to atlanta to see them play at a bar. one of the best shows ive ever seen. if you like this song u gotta check out thier previous two albums, "all this time" and "stairs and elevators". erica is a true genius

Natalie | November 21, 2008 4:03 PM

haunting and beautiful. she sounds like she could be the female John Lee Hooker, which is a compliment of the highest order.

Anonymous | November 21, 2008 2:54 PM

What a unique and powerful voice and what a sound! I am a sucker for great songwriting and now I know why you are calling this "The Best Song In The World" On the surface, it sounds like a simple melody, but if you break it down, it is as complex as anything I have heard in years. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album-McCarthy is a great producer and with this kind of songwriting talent, we may be in for something special!

Anonymous | November 21, 2008 2:28 PM

apparently, this band blasts and transforms all with their live shows. I can't wait to see them when they come to NYC next year. BTW,this song does wail!

Robert | November 21, 2008 2:17 PM

I thought it was pretty good when I first listened, but by the 2nd listen, I was HOOKED!! Who the "F" are these guys and where have they been hiding?!? I must investigate...

Marty | November 21, 2008 12:59 PM

I don't know if it's the best song in the world, but it's pretty fucking great. I'm going to check this band out. And maybe I'll even spend money on them.

Anonymous | November 21, 2008 7:06 AM

I guess I'm missing something.

Anonymous | November 21, 2008 1:57 AM
