Ben Harper Loves Icelandic Rock, Unveils Clothing Line

We caught up with our pal Ben Harper at a preview party for his new clothing line, Propr (which he co-created alongside actor David Arquette and designer David Bedwell). While we were there, Ben demanded we check out Icelandic newcomer Mugison.

"I just got a record from this kid from Iceland," he told us. "It is stunning. He’s got the song, 'Jesus Is A Good Name To Moan.' If you do nothing else today, download Mugison."

Harper, (who's early attempts at a clothing line 14 years ago went unfulfilled) said he always wanted to be involved in fashion and calls the opportunity to be working with the David's “a dream realized."

The collection is equal parts Harper, Arquette and Bedwell, and is intended to "cross-pollinate seasons," says Harper, "It's the kind of clothes you'd want to have at arms reach in your closet at all times." Arquette's philosophy: "Clothes that you can wear in St. Tropez or South Central."

Both Harper and Arquette affirm being hands-on is what makes their business distinctive. Says Arquette, "It's hard to get personal when there's such a big machine behind it. We really wanted to do something where we were all involved. Our profit isn't gonna be as much as it would be if we sent it to China, but that's also part of the point. Build a company that inspires people, do something that we love and that people feel invested in."
