One of the best albums of '08 is the Black Keys' Attack and Release, which kicks off with "All You Ever Wanted."
It starts out pretty chill, but at the 2:18 mark, the song explodes with an barrage of organ and synth-bass. We would compare it to the transcendental moment when Miles Davis' trumpet comes in on "So What", or the snare crack on "Like A Rolling Stone."
Black Keys guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney have some fond (although not exactly similar) memories on recording the euphoric ending of "All You Ever Wanted," and they were nice enough to share them exclusively with the Smoking Section. Head to the jump to read what the boys had to say.
DAN:
The 2:18 mark on "All You Ever Wanted" is like the greatest moment ever. It goes up there with Kind of Blue and Like a Rolling Stone?
Wow, that's cool man.
How'd you do it?
Well, you know, I play the organ on that and it's slide guitar. It's open tuning blended with the organ. So we blended it all together to make it sound like just another instrument basically. And that's it. It's that, and I played some synthesizer bass parts. That's sort of the super-deep sub-bass -- it makes it sound larger than life. You know?
You guys did it. So tell me about just listening back to that part in the studio. I guess it must have been pretty fuckin' rad.
Oh, it was great because the studio we were at, they got these huge fucking speakers now, and Brian [Danger Mouse] likes to listen to shit really loud. And you know, we finished the song, did a rough mix, and then it was like, "Whoa, that was so perfect." And I mean everything we did before those two minutes kind of made the last half sound that much bigger. We were just hoping for some sort of insane headphone moment. That's what we were going for.
PATRICK:
Hey Patrick, I was talking to Dan about that moment in "All You Ever Wanted" was when that synth bass and that organ comes in, just…
At the very end?
Yeah. I was just telling him how awesome I thought that was.
Oh, sweet. I actually did all of that when Dan and Brian went
out to get pizza.
