The Next Rock Stars (Of Pro Cycling): Team Slipstream-Chipotle

June 9, 2008 4:42 PM

Visiting the Rolling Stone offices on Friday June 6: Team Slipstream-Chipotle! No, that's not some British DJ duo — it's the classy American racing outfit that's making serious waves in the professional bike racing scene. Now you might think that the Capri Lounge is no place for a post about a pro bike racing team. Well, I think it's no place for an affectionate post about the New Kids on the Block, and we've sure had plenty of those recently. So put that in your Joey McIntyre doll and smoke it, fanboy.

Besides, the Slipstream-Chipotle guys were pretty psyched to come visit Rolling Stone (and also some editors from Men's Journal, another fabulous magazine published by this company.) In the Slipstream entourage were director sportif (also known as the boss) Jonathan Vaughters, former Paris-Roubaix race winner Magnus Backstedt, Martin Maaskant (who finished fourth at this year's Paris-Roubaix), Steve Cozza (best young rider at the Tour of Missouri) and Mike "Meatball" Friedman, a great rider and funny guy who rides a training bike with an orange flag on the back and once smooshed a banana into his bike shorts because his butt was hurting (how rock and roll is that?)

But seriously, here's why you should care about Team Slipstream-Chipotle:

  1. They're doing it the right way. Even if you don’t know much about bike racing, you probably know that the sport, like a lot of other sports, has been polluted by performance enhancing drug use. Slipstream has combated this plague by implementing its own drug testing regimens — the team regularly tests its own riders — in addition to the many tests conducted by professional cycling agencies. The idea is to create an anti-drug culture within the team, assuring riders they do not have to dope to survive. Slipstream's model has already been adopted by several other prominent teams, and you can be assured it will eventually migrate over to other sports like baseball, football and basketball.

  2. They're winning big races. Last month, Team Slipsteam took the pink leader's jersey in the Giro d'Italia, which is the biggest bike race in the world next to the Tour de France. It was the first time an American rider (Christian VandeVelde) had worn the pink Giro jersey in 20 years.

  3. Slipstream rocks argyle in their team uniforms. They did this long before Vampire Weekend came around and made argyle fashionable again.

  4. Slipstream-Chipotle is co-sponsored by a BURRITO COMPANY! Not only that, the burritos are DELICIOUS!

  5. Two of the riders — Steve Cozza and Dave Zabriskie — have moustaches.

  6. Again, MEATBALL SMOOSHED A BANANA IN HIS SHORTS! The guy completely rules.

Okay, that's enough of the bike talk. You can now return to your regularly scheduled rock & roll on the Capri Lounge. But the next time you're flipping the dials at the weird end of the cable box and you see a guy flying around in argyle spandex, stop for a second. That's Slipstream, man, and they’re the next rock stars of pro cycling, the greatest sport in the history of sports. Okay, I'll stop now....

Horaaay for cycling! Absolutely love both pro cycling and rolling stone, and if anyone can save this great sport, its slipstream-chipotle. Christain Vandevelde is in a solid 3rd overall right now, so keep rooting for him!

Argyle is the new black, burritos are the new Gu, cycling is the new UFC, and Slipstream is the new Rock Racing. But then again, it's a cycling thang, so you wouldn't understand.

Nice find! | June 14, 2008 1:06 PM

I will be watching le Tour this year, and following the boys around France. This is the team's first tour, but watch for Christian Vande Velde! Dave Zabriskie is one of the fastest men on the planted - he is rocking the 'stach this year. And if anyone is looking for a rock connection - checkout missingsaddle.com Dave Zabriskie audio blogs.

Vive le Tour!

I know how you think that Rolling Stones is the bible, so I thought this might give us cyclist a little credibility.

I even heard Chipotle is doing a special edition burrito for the team available to the public soon.

I am all about the Argyle Armada!

Thanks for the post. Now I have someone to root for in this year's Tour. Not all posts have to "have any relevance to real music". Whatever that is.

You are both right: | June 9, 2008 7:47 PM

Yup, neither have any relevance to real music. Check them both at the door to your office and get back to writing about something more worthwhile. Thanks.
