This past Friday, German pop sensation Tokio Hotel invaded the Rolling Stone office for an hour. As you can tell by the image above, these guys certainly have a unique image that has somehow struck a chord with teenage fans all over the world. I don't necessarily understand how this group got so popular, but I also do not think I am necessarily their target audience.
We did a short video interview with them in which they discussed such topics as German hip-hop, their infamous crazy fans, and of course, their love for David Hasselhoff (seriously, the 'Hoff came up at least two or three times).
Normally with a video shoot we're concerned about the usual things like setting up lights and making sure the audio is recording properly. However, this was the first time we were legitimately concerned that the lighting may or may not start a fire due to the amount of makeup and product applied to the band. (OK, so maybe we were a bit worried about the same thing when Heidi and Spencer also came in.)
Before the shoot, I was in the bathroom washing my hands when lead singer/heart-throb Bill walked in. His personal security guard stared me down, figured that a young intern such as myself was not a threat and let me finish drying my hands off without confrontation while Bill went and did his thing. It was one of the more bizarre moments I've had as an intern in the past couple of months, but knowing that I basically lived the dream of every 15 year old girl on the planet feels pretty damn good.

t.rr | May 17, 2008 8:04 AM
I'm surprised and happy to see that the audience in the USA is wider than in Europe.
Here, we have to deal with people that just don't like them and spend way too much time hating the band.
I just don't get it, they should be more respected. I'm more than 15 and I love TH.
And stop saying they are emo!
Aimee | May 15, 2008 10:31 PM
Yes. You did get to live the dream of every American 15 year old girl... and it would make me feel pretty damn good too. And if Bill ever walked in on me in the bathroom... security would have to tazer me, put me in handcuffs, and tie me to a pole with meat hanging from my neck while surrounded by attack dogs... O-o >.> .> <.<
colove | May 15, 2008 8:56 AM
Oh my gosh, i cant believe they're actually getting popular in the USA.... that's kind of embarrassing for us germans.... you gotta know that most people here in Germany hate them.
Well and they actually ARE emo... Not necessarily because of their look, but just listen to bill and the stuff which he says... he is very emotional^^...
and they definately ARE NOT a Rock band....
well, tschüss ;)

ok FYI Tokio Hotel's definitly NOT an emo or Tweeny band!! They're an awesome GERMAN ROCK band!! get your facts straight! I happen to be 20yrs and I have been a fan for 2yrs now and have waited for them to come to the State in what seemed like forever for me. I knew deep down that TH would make it big in the States I just had a gut feeling about it. I saw them at the Roxy when they came in FEB, it was the best damn day of my LIFE!! TH's muisc is banging wicked cool, and the lyrics are true and amazing!! I absolutly love this band! I can't wait to see more of them soon!!

Everybody says "BTW they are not EMO?!" like it was something bad?
is it? :O
angelina | May 14, 2008 4:55 AM

Karen | May 14, 2008 12:57 AM
I'm 19 and my mother is way over that. We both adore Tokio Hotel and their music.
Thanks for the article. Looking forward to interview.

Ok I'm 28 and I love Tokio Hotel so could you please not say that TH is just going after tweens and teens, I know alot of people in their 20's who like TH.
Also they are not Emo,why does everyone label someone who looks different as "emo"? They are just an awesome ROCK BAND who make awesome music.
Katya | May 13, 2008 5:13 PM
THEY ARE NOT EMO!
and Felicia "Bill likes 2nd hand stores " FALSE
u should see where they sell his clothing
they are pretty exspensive
Felicia | May 13, 2008 4:00 PM
>.> I appreciate you posting this, but they're NOT emo, nor are they a teeny band! D=.> God... you need to get your facts straight too. They're not into fashion whatsoever. Bill likes 2nd hand stores and wears whatever the hell he feels like. And now I'm pissed of at that other person who said that TH was emo because of their lyrics T_T they don't talk about killing themselves and whatnot... they're talking about NOT killing yourself, that you have push through whatever you're going through and that you can't give no matter what. They also say that you have to be your own person and you can't let anybody tell you what to do.
Anonymous | May 13, 2008 2:53 PM
TH is NOT emo! It's a label people use who have no idea about their music or who they are. It is a generalization which is fast becoming annoying. And they aren't a teeny band either. I am 26 years old, and I am so not an exception. They era of the screaming 13 year olds is over and now it't 23 and upwards who scream.
As for the music, anyone who has seen their concert dvds will have to acknowledge how great they are. Hell, my mother loves them, and she is a director of a school :)
TH fan | May 13, 2008 1:30 PM
Ok I LOVE Tokio Hotel.
But I have to admit that the reportage came out brilliant, with a nice humor touch.
"I basically lived the dream of every 15 year old girl on the planet feels pretty damn good."
And God, I'm older than 15, but you'r damn right: you lived my dream!
Dankee | May 13, 2008 7:28 AM
Thanks for much for this article about Tokio Hotel. We love them so much and cannot wait till they are back in the states later this year.
Let me see if I can dig up a fangirl photo from INSIDE the men's bathroom, which would give you some insight why Bill takes his bodyguard with him. Heh. Can you imagine how much a photo of that penis would go for?
YOWZAH
Steph | May 13, 2008 12:53 AM
oooo I love Tokio Hotel!!!
Thanks for this article!!!
Hello | May 12, 2008 11:24 PM
Whatever they are, there's no fact that they are or aren't emo. I think it's just a word, nothing at all, and I don't find it so important of these stereotypical labels.
ANYWHO, TOKIO HOTEL ROCKS!!!!!!!
Last paragraph, FTW.
cghk | May 12, 2008 9:33 PM
They are emo. Have you read any of their lyrics? Not that it matters...
I want to see that video. When is it going to be made viewable?
isl | May 12, 2008 8:56 PM
^^ I can imagine the fear for the hair and make up
anyway, so when do we get the video interview ;) That would be very nice
And thank's for featuring them! They are a really good band and we fans are always glad when they are given the opportunity to shine
MM | May 12, 2008 8:52 PM
Oh, indeed- you've lived one of my dreams. However, it's not to be in the bathroom with Bill, far from it. It's to be stared down by Saki. <3
Alexandra | May 12, 2008 7:53 PM
Tokio Hotel is not emo. I wish people would just stop judging them on there apperance.Theres alot more to them then that. But other then that thanks for talking about them :)
whatever | May 12, 2008 7:31 PM
THEY NOT EMO
WTF!!!!
Bella | May 12, 2008 7:19 PM
I do hate how everyone calls them "emo" b/c if you know this band like us fans, that word would never come up. But most importantly, a big thanx for mentioning Tokio Hotel *jumps w/ joy*. I can't wait to see that video.
Dali | May 12, 2008 7:13 PM
Please stop saying that they are a band for teenagers! They are "also" for teenagers, but their audience is wider.
I'm 24 and I just love their music!
Val | May 12, 2008 6:54 PM
Thanks for mentioning this absolutely brilliant and unique band (who BTW is NOT emo).
Lucky | May 12, 2008 6:49 PM
Why does everybody refer to them as emo? They're not.
However, thanks for mentioning them.
One question remains, is that video interview you're talking about already available?
sheman! | May 12, 2008 4:16 PM
It was hard to tell that the one that seems really into fashion was a guy.
