Hanging in my cubicle here at Rolling Stone's stately world headquarters is the cover of our June 24th, 1999 edition: a portrait of Jar Jar Binks reading RS’ first Star Wars issue. It was, of course, an awful idea. It turned out that everyone — even pre-schoolers — hated Jar Jar Binks, almost as much as they loathed the awful child who played Anakin Skywalker. But the cover — with its stone-classic cover line, "Jar Jar Superstar" — remains a thing of beauty.
Over on the other side of the office, there's a long hallway that displays the covers of every issue of Rolling Stone. Once in a while, when deadlines start to melt my brain, I sneak over there to remind myself that the other thousand-plus issues somehow came out.
At the same time, I tend to seek out other loony covers. A favorite is RS 602, which is devoted to "New Faces '91." Which new faces? Why, Nuno Bettencourt, Chris Isaak, Charlatans U.K., and De La Soul, of course. (Nice pick on the De La Soul, though.) And who remembered that Belly, Neneh Cherry, Terence Trent D'Arby, Margot Kidder, Dennis Rodman, Blind Melon and Tom Green all made the cover of Rolling Stone? Not to mention Jeff Daniels in a Tronoutfit. That one's going up in my cube next week.
What crazy Rolling Stone covers do you secretly love?

Former cover girl Margot Kidder still has some loyalty to RS: She was spotted reading the latest issue!

Who could forget the classic cover from the late 70s/early 80s with a shirtless Jim Morrison and a headline proclaiming: "He's hot! He's sexy! He's DEAD!"
