Introducing The Capri Lounge: A Revolutionary New Blog That Will Change Everything

March 4, 2008 10:27 AM

Welcome to the Capri Lounge. You are probably wondering where you are and what you are doing here. Since I’m the one who asked for this blog to be created, I guess it’s up to me to explain it. I’m Will Dana, managing editor of Rolling Stone. I wanted to create a place on RollingStone.com where editors could post random thoughts (“does David Archuleta annoy you too?”) and, more importantly, where readers and editors could talk to each other. Back in the days when major office drug use tended to be of the non-prescription variety, the Capri Lounge was a small, dark room near the production department where editors and writers could go to “relax” and spend money on their favored recreational supplies. Most of us who work here today were in third or fourth grade when the Capri Lounge was at its height, so we really can’t say if the stuff you could buy there was more exciting than the Baked Cheetos they just started stocking in the office vending machine.

So, anyway, that’s why this blog is called the Capri Lounge. Think of it as a place where we’ll always be passing around an open bag of Cheetos. If you care to know what we’re thinking – I, for instance, think that Track 4 of the forthcoming REM album might be as good as any song they’ve ever written – this is the place to be. There will be at least one RS editor hanging out here every day. We hope lots of you will be here to keep us company.

What was the point of this article if there is no blog. I was excited for this but Will is no where to be found. Why did you write this if there is not going to be any discussion???

I have never taken part in a blog before, but this one, this one sounds interesting. I am an old Hunter Thompson fan and am hoping to get a bit of gonzo type fun from you guys!

when does it start?

Regarding your 25 essential Kinks albums "Prince of the Punks was not on the original Kinks Sleepwaker LP It came out only on the CD. I was something Davies always did in concert but never put on an album.

I like this idea. I am sure you guys are as cool as the old guard (circa 1974) and I would like to get a better feel for where you stand on todays and yesterdays music and why.

anony | March 5, 2008 1:12 PM

Sounds cool, what other new records have you guys been buzzing about?

The Mary Hartmann connection never occurred to me. Let me track that one down . As for the REM record - the good news is it sounds like REM. The even better news is that it sounds like good REM. Lots of guitars. Lots of words that don't really make sense.

I wonder if the the name, 'The Capri Lounge' has any relation to the Capri Lounge of Mary Hartman Mary Hartman?

What else can you tell us about the new R.E.M.?

Welcome to the web, Will. Long overdue! (and chinese democracy = chicago cubs world series)

Anonymous | March 4, 2008 5:38 PM

Chinese Democracy - I don't really know much more than you do. That said, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Scott | March 4, 2008 5:15 PM

This sounds great.
What do you, editor one, know about the status of Chinese Democracy? Rumor has it, it's done.

Would be happy to join you there anytime for conversation that is sometimes meaningful but always spirited.
