Breaking: Joshua Radin

October 14, 2008 1:41 PM

Who: Cleveland-born singer-songwriter whose second record of hushed folk-rock, Simple Times, topped the iTunes album chart after he rocked the lesbian wedding of 2008: Ellen DeGeneres invited the 34-year-old to serenade her and Portia de Rossi at the pair’s August nuptials (Ellen then aired a clip on her show). “I played a few songs, then stuck around for some vegan red-velvet cake,” says Radin, who struck up a friendship with DeGeneres after sitting next to her at a dinner party. Now his first single, the John Mayer-esque “I’d Rather Be With You” is getting radio play. “Aside from my mom,” says Radin, whose CD was produced by Elliott Smith collaborator Rob Schnapf, “Ellen’s been the biggest supporter of my career.”

Back Story: A onetime aspiring screenwriter, Radin penned his first song after splitting with girlfriend Schuyler Fisk (Sissy Spacek’s daughter) in 2004.

“I started getting my sad out,” he says. College pal Zach Braff — who’d just snagged the lead on Scrubs — heard the track, and got it on the show. “The producer kept asking, ‘Where can I get more music?’” says Radin, whose tunes have also been on Grey’s Anatomy and One Tree Hill. “I was like, ‘I’ve only written one song! Better get to writing!' "

What’s Next: Radin is touring through November 12th. He’s also fending off proposals: “I’m getting text messages from friends — ‘I’m getting married! What song are you gonna play?’” he says. “I’m like, ‘I’m not a wedding singer!”

If you have to do it, you might as well do it right.

Joshua is not an overnight success...his delicate approach and lyrics have stuck to me... I've heard his tunes on several movie soundtracks such as "catch & release", "the last kiss" and recently the "Nanny diaries" in this movie I could tell it was his song from the first string of the guitar.

someone from "so you think you can dance" also did a routine to his song 'the fear you won't fall"

I hope that the cd 'simple times' wich is AMAZING brings Joshua the world wide recognition that he deserves ,and that WE (the spectator) deserve for the album is medicine to the soul.

I am in love with Joshua Radin's music, and have been ever since I heard the first song on Scrubs. I have been downloading and buying all his music as soon as it was available, and now I am so happy that he is finally performing in my town! Could life be better? You have to check this guy out!

I fell in love with him last year and had the opportunity to see him in Iowa City, he was amazing and so incredibly nice, willing to talk to anyone but really very shy. He is an amazing artist.

I love Joshua Radin. His music is so beautiful and you can tell that it comes straight from his heart and soul..plus he is pretty cute too =)

Wow, this is a cute article. I have one thing to point out though... Joshua Radin and Schuyler Fisk didn't break up until sometime in 2007. I'm pretty sure the split he is referring to when he wrote his first song ever was a previous relationship. Simple Times has a lot more songs about the Fisk breakup... not the first one.

Sorry... just wanted to clarify.

I am so glad that Joshua Radin is starting to get more recognition. His music is so powerful, it's great to know that more people are starting to take notice. I love the new album and I can't wait to see him the next time he is on tour.

Great to see Joshua getting the recognition he deserves and getting into more press stuff!
Simple Times was an amazing follow-up to We Were Here, and should be owned by everyone.

May 2005, my friends and I piled into our car and drove from Logan, Utah to see Joshua Radin play at the Hotel Cafe. He was awesome and I've lost count of how many times I've been to his shows because it's a lot and he is that good! Not only is an extremely talented musician but he's a great guy. He always goes out of his way to acknowledge my existence at his shows (love ya for that buddy)! Simple Times is fantastic album, so go buy it! He rocks the most!

Josh Radin is amazing! I saw him open for Anna Nalick over two years ago, and have now seen him a total of 6 times[: His new album, Simple Times, is worth every penny!

You have to check out Joshua Radin, I heard his first EP and was instantly hooked. 'Simple Times,' his new album, is a masterpiece, and should be bought now!

ckcpurple | October 25, 2008 12:52 AM

Joshua Radin's new album is even better than the first. "You've Got growing Up To Do" is his best yet. While I don't wish him anymore heartache, if it keeps great music like this coming my way....I might have to reconsider!

Linds | October 23, 2008 9:20 PM

Brilliant artist. Brilliant album. This has been an awesome year for new music, and it's not over yet! :)

Anonymous | October 23, 2008 9:06 PM

Thank goodness for break-ups! :) Josh is an incredibly talented guy and he's one of the nicest musicians out there. He deserves all the success that's coming his way!

Chloe | October 23, 2008 6:49 PM

Wow, I'm a huge Joshua Radin fan, but I had no clue his producer worked with Elliott Smith! That's awesome. I thought I heard a Joshua Radin tune in the background of a One Tree Hill scene (that show is a damn guilty pleasure). Anyone who hasn't already should buy his new album, it's totally worth the money:].
