Breaking: Carolina Liar

August 20, 2008 4:07 PM

Who: Los Angeles-via-Stockholm sextet Carolina Liar, who, with the help of mega-producer Max Martin, are soundtracking every premature break-up this summer with their hit "I'm Not Over."

Sounds Like: Combining the Killers' new New Wave, U2's knack for anthems and the bubblegum pop productions of Martin, Carolina Liar come off as the perfect house band for The Hills. Perhaps that's why singer Chad Wolf and the rest of the group had four songs from their debut album Coming to Terms featured on the MTV show. The band will spread their infectious pop across the country as they tour with The Academy Is… this fall.

Vital Stats

• Wolf had an early start in music, taking part with his piano-playing grandmother at a church in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. From there, Wolf moved to Los Angeles, where he interned for Songwriter Hall of Famer Diane Warren, danced in a Celine Dion video and played countless coffee shops. It was by chance he met famed Swedish pop producer Max Martin…

• "I was house-sitting for one of Max Martin's best friends." After befriending the boy band extraordinaire, Wolf was persuaded by friends to spend the summer in Sweden. Originally the plan was just to watch some World Cup games, but "On the flight over, I wrote the lyrics to Coming to Terms in a plane seat." A demo tape came out of that trip, and a year later, Wolf found himself back in Stockholm, recording an album.

• "Whatever I could get my hands on, I would listen to," Wolf says of the music that shaped him, starting with the first album he ever bought, Duran Duran's A View to a Kill. "I went through this crazy Cure and Smiths phase, then a heavy jazz phase, and then blues," Wolf says. "Tons of country stuff too."

Hey I love your song very much

playing for only a Dollar!!! | September 1, 2008 8:33 AM

Now with new bands not making any money from record sales I couldn't not believe it they were playing in my local bar for 1 dollar.
Honestly a band that has a top 5 single playing a small venue saying that they were great full to be there is something I've never seen. For once everyone at the bar seemed to be having fun. There wasn't a soap box where I was standing at all. Just a band willing to give back.

Don't mean to be brash there's 2 ways about it and you're entitled to your opinion. But 5 guys from Sweden and one from South Carolina playing for a dollar traveling in a van across America is something unique and I would not miss a chance to see Carolina Liar play again.

I love this album. My favorite songs are "Show me what Im looking for" and "All that s**t is gone." I honestly had never even heard "Im not over" until the other day when I finally bought the album. A good song too, but it isnt the reason I bought Carolina Liar!

One more thing... I hope they release a couple of more singles from "Coming to Terms." I can think of at least 5 that would be immediate hits on the radio. "I'm Not Over" isn't even my favorite song on the album!!

I bought the entire album on itunes in June after falling in love with "I'm Not Over" on the radio. I love every track on that album. I got the bonus version with 15 tracks and I never skip past any of them. I saw them live at the Santa Monica Pier in California in July, and they rock live!!! "Coming To Terms" is my favorite album of the year.

I just saw Carolina Liar do an opening show in concert. They were awesome and should keep at it because they're really talented. With some more work, they'll be expert headbangers, too.
