Breaking Artist: Robyn

April 2, 2008 2:41 PM

Who: Swedish pop queen Robyn, who eschewed a career as the Scandinavian Jessica Simpson on her way to becoming Sweden's Gwen Stefani. Ten years after abandoning the spotlight following her hit "Show Me Love," the singer is back with a self-titled album that both indie rock geeks and Top 40 radio listeners can enjoy.

Sounds Like: A platinum blonde synthesis of Britney Spears and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O, except Swedish. With a team of songwriters and producers that include the Knife, the Teddybears and Kleerup, Robyn explains her new album is "pop music, but it's OK to like it." Singles like "With Every Heartbeat" and "Be Mine!" have already conquered European charts and seem poised to have similar luck here.

Vital Stats

• Robyn linked up with pop hit machine Max Martin before the songwriter wrote Britney Spears' "... Baby One More Time." However, "It was frustrating for me to be a teen star," says Robyn, explaining why she canceled a planned tour with the Backstreet Boys that would've jettisoned her to superstardom.

• The battle between Robyn's avant-garde impulses and her desire to connect with a pop audience are the result of a childhood traveling with her parents' experimental theater company. "I definitely considered my parents to be pretty pretentious when I was growing up," she says. "Hip-hop and R&B music were a way to separate myself from them."

• After a falling out with her previous record label Jive over singles they deemed were too weird (such as the Knife-produced "Who's That Girl"), Robyn started her own label, recorded and released her self-titled album on her own in Europe before hooking up with Interscope for the U.S. release.

Hear It Now: Robyn's album finally hits American shores May 6th. Head over to her MySpace page to sample some tracks, or watch the above video of Robyn's interview with Rolling Stone at the South By Southwest festival.

Robyn's been my fave since the get-go. Just went to NYC on 2/6 to see her perform...absolutely mind-blowing! She's kicking off her 1st official U.S. tour, so check out her MySpace for dates. See her live if you have a chance! Robyn is Here!

I've been interested-- I remember when I heard her songs "Show Me Love" and "Do You Know What it Takes" and I was thinking prior to clicking on this "is this really the same girl I think it is?" because it's weird to say she's breaking if she's broke here before, you know? I think it's interesting what she says about not being the opener for BSB. I think it's pretty conflicting, because, at one end of the spectrum, teens DO have a lot of marketable buying power, but at the same time, you don't want to have an uphill battle with the critics and needing your fans to grow with you. Even in the 'Boys career, they've had to keep growing up with their fanbase, who, according to a massive poll on LiveDaily, are on average 22-24 years old now. It's no longer about "OMG that person's hot OMG marry me!!!" and it's more about "okay, I respect your music and you as people, but I'm a fan because of the music." And time has officially weeded out the idiots who got heartbroken, because god forbid they had girlfriends or even got married to the women they love. But, many teen idols don't make that transition. I could completely see why Robyn didn't want to go that route. And-- Jive... psh, don't get me started on that label-- they're the kind that seem to think that for BSB, they need 3 sleeper mid-tempos in a row for singles. I kinda wish some 'somebodies' would do like Robyn and take the high road and take their business elsewhere. Go Robyn!

Her last two albums are sheer bliss. Shock full of electronic candy. And Andreas Kleerup - with whom Robyn did "With every heartbeat" - is a genius! His debut album will be released in May I think.

If memory serves...Didn't she "break" like over ten years ago? Pretty sure she had a couple of hits pre-Britney/Xtina/Backstreet, etc. Haven't heard any of her new stuff? Is it any good?

Love to hear now fresh sounds

You can't be a breakout artist when you broke out 10 years ago. She went back to Sweden after one minor hit then, she likely will again.

With Every Heartbeat is sublime. There's a new single out over here and it's ok. There' a vulnerability and a European-ness about her that is appealing.

I got the European release and it is great! Looking forward to the American release. The album might not be for everyone but I agree it's a great Indie / Pop album. Love the mix. Don't know how she is a breaking artist since she's been around. She's released albums in Europe just not in America since her debut album in the 90's.

That chick looks like Bowie, but she isn't any good.

how can an artist who has been around for more than a decade be a breaking artist? she wasn't good in the 90s and she's not good now.

the song Be Mine, is a masterpiece!
Only a stringsection + drums!
