Shortbus  Hear it Now

RS: 3.5of 5 Stars

2007

In his glam-tastic debut, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, director John Cameron Mitchell paired sexuality and rock & roll to tell the story of a dubiously gendered rock singer. In Shortbus, Mitchell's follow-up, the rock takes a back seat to the kink. This isn't your father's porn, so in place of cheesy synths and wicka-wicka guitar lines, Mitchell mines a mother lode of alt-rock, with original songs ranging from shambolic freak folk on the Animal Collective's "Winter's Love"; wistful singer-songwriter fare from John LaMonica and Jay Brannan; the indie pop of Azure Ray, the Hidden Cameras and Yo La Tengo (who scored the movie); and the arena/dance-rock freakouts of Sweden's the Ark. The music in Shortbus may lack the unifying force of Hedwig's narrative, but Mitchell still has the touch to deliver a sentimental collection of indie rock that could teach Zach Braff a thing or two.
