Hear it NowAs varied as it is both in its quality and in the range of artists represented, Diana, Princess of Wales: Tribute manages, almost eerily, to summon the grief occasioned by Diana Spencer's death. One ballad after another on the album – a mix of new and previously released tracks by the likes of Puff Daddy, Bryan Ferry and Celine Dion – evokes the ravages of loss. While not for the easily depressed or for skeptics, this two-disc set will move all those who found in Princess Diana a symbol for the struggles of their own lives.
The Elton John revision of "Candle in the Wind" does not appear, but some unlikely mourners do turn up – notably Sinéad O'Connor (on the gentle "Make Me a Channel of Your Peace"), who to this point had made something of a career as the anti-Diana. Peter Gabriel ("In the Sun") and R.E.M. ("Everybody Hurts") are also on hand, while Rod Stewart offers an aching cover of Bob Dylan's "Love Minus Zero/No Limit." "I'll Be Missing You," Puff Daddy's elegy for the Notorious B.I.G., assumes a provocative new meaning in this context. On the gospel-derived "Every Nation," R. Kelly leads the Red Hot All Stars, an ensemble that includes Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige and Curtis Mayfield.
Proceeds from Tribute will benefit a memorial fund established in Diana's name. (RS 775)
