Album Reviews
After listening to hip-hop heads from Houston and across the country shout "Free Pimp C" for four years, it's a thrill to hear "I'm Free," the ebullient opener on the trailblazing Port Arthur, Texas, native's first album since being released from the pen late last year. Backed by an inspired sample from Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'," C recounts his time inside, celebrates his release and sets an agenda in double-time drawl: "I was plottin' and plannin' and schemin' every day/Getting ready for my release so I could steal the game away." Unfortunately, it's one of the few tracks where the acclaimed MC uses his impressive flow and lyrical creativity to much effect. The rest of this guest-spot-heavy album doesn't live up to the pent-up anticipation.
