Avenging Angels

Extraordinary crimes against the people and the State have to be avenged by The Avengers soundtrack, starring Blur, Radiohead, the Verve Pipe, Sinead O'Connor and Sugar Ray. And, just for good measure, Tori Amos, Annie Lennox, Stereo MCs, and possibly Beck and Prodigy, will do some avenging of their own.

The powerhouse lineup of modern rockers will join together for the sole purpose of raking in cash and adding contemporary flair to the film adaptation of the '60s tongue-in-check spy adventure TV series, which stars Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman. The soundtrack will hit stores in early July, prior to the film's release.

Earlier this month, Radiohead entered a London studio to record a song, tentatively-titled "Big Boots," for the soundtrack. According to the band's co-manager Bryce Edge, Radiohead reserves the right to not give the song to Atlantic Records if it "turns out to be a turkey." Later this month, the Verve Pipe will team with Andy Partridge to record a song co-written by Partridge and Verve Pipe frontman Brian Vander Ark called "Blow You Away." The Stereo MCs will contribute one of three songs -- "Neverending," "Chant" or an untitled track.

A side-project called Ashtar Command, featuring Yum Yum's Chris Holmes, former Filter programmer Brian Liesegang and Beck drummer Joey Waronker, will also ante up a song, as will the Utah Saints featuring Iggy Pop, with "Technology."

Other bands confirmed to appear on the soundtrack include Annie Lennox ("Mama"), Dishwalla ("Truth Serum"), Blur, Tori Amos, Sinead O'Connor, Sugar Ray and a new band called Spy. Artists also considering joining the soundtrack roster include Beck and Prodigy.
