Usher Raymond does have the face of an angel, and he can hit his notes, but not hard enough to make them stick. Unlike his two sleek studio albums, Usher and My Way, which supplied necessary lush effects and lavish backup tracks, Live leaves its star dry and stranded. The hits are trotted out, from the admittedly irresistible "Think of You" to "You Make Me Wanna . . ." to the Lil' Kim-in-a-can duet, "Just Like Me." But his music's layered backing vocals, so essential in the studio, sound tinny when piped into a performance hall. The album's only immediacy comes with the sound of thousands of Chattanooga, Tennessee, teenagers chanting "U-sher!" at swooning decibels.
