In the nineties, Tonic helped invent what radio programmers call modern rock: loud-ass guitars framing cathartic yowls and bad high school poetry. Their fourth album, Head On Straight, is less rootsy and harder-rocking than previous efforts. But cuts such as "On Your Feet Again" sport choruses big enough for Creed, and singer Emerson Hart sounds like such a nice guy that you're sort of glad he has turned out an album exactly suited for its purposes: giving hope to starry-eyed teenagers and lighting up the airwaves.
