Thrice are four Orange County boys who combine spidery guitar lines, titanic metal riffage and tricky rhythms into prog-emo that's simultaneously elegant and raw-boned. But over eleven cuts, all the existential angst and stylized darkness of Vheissu starts to feel oppressive. Singer Dustin Kensrue is an achy-voiced wailer able to make a romantic betrayal sound like a nuclear holocaust, vowing to die for his lover over the churning riffs and grand swells of "Like Moths to Flame." You don't have to be down in the mouth to appreciate his epic pain. But you can bet it helps.
