Album Reviews
An ebullient, hippie-esque, soul-obsessed white boy, Thicke has
a sweet, airy voice and no real sense of how to apply it profitably. Like an American incarnation of Jamiroquai's Jay Kay, Thicke yelps, grins and aims for Stevie Wonder-like vocal acuity, hitting it on "When I Get You Alone," which samples the Seventies disco classic "A Fifth of Beethoven," and missing it much of the rest of the time. Worst of all, Thicke makes what is, for the son of small-screen Uberdad Alan Thicke, the unforgivable mistake of using breezy arrangements -- on "Lazy Bones" and "Brand New Jones" -- that sound lifted from a soon-to-be-canceled TV sitcom.
