The Warlocks' sound is a bong-water sludge dominated by slow-motion fuzz guitars and singer Bobby Hecksher's woozy vocals -- in other words, they're a stoner-rock band. But on Surgery, the seven-member group also reveals an odd, charming penchant for time-travel balladry, as on the "Above Earth" chord progression of "Angels in Heaven, Angels in Hell" and the mutated Sixties pop of "Evil Eyes Again." After two relatively sprightly opening tracks, the album settles into a narcotic parade of slow songs. The result is occasionally snoozy but always intoxicating.
