Album Reviews
On Red Letter Days, Jakob Dylan and his Wallflowers have returned to the hitmaking terrain of their 1996 breakthrough, Bringing Down the Horse. The album overflows with catchy melodies, propelled by Dylan's urgent vocals, an array of Rami Jaffee's keyboards (from rootsy B-3 organ to Space Age synths to cool vibes) and some chiming guitar work, in a few cases provided by guest Mike McCready of Pearl Jam. Anthemic bash-and-pop predominates the proceedings; there's also a panoply of singalong lyrics (from "When You're on Top": "I feel fine/With the sun in my eyes/The wind in my hair"). Dylan is becoming a more versatile vocalist as well; he comes close to a croon on the lovely "Closer to You," and he belts it out on "Everybody Out of the Water." It adds up to a straightforward barnburner of an album.
