Featuring a handful of earthy bands, like Sister Hazel and the Old 97's, along with a fair share of dead or assumed dead artists like Elvis Presley, Dean Martin and Pat Boone, the album is a either a catalyst or cure for depression, depending on your tastes.
Tonic, who recently appeared on the Scream 2 soundtrack and covered "Second Hand News" for A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, will enter the studio next month to record the late Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin,'" the theme song from the film Midnight Cowboy.
Sister Hazel, who recorded "Gold Dust Woman" for the Mac tribute album, will contribute a cover of the Bellamy Brothers' country ditty "Let Your Love Flow."
The Verve Pipe will -- surprise, surprise -- likely add an original tune to the mix, an outtake from their forthcoming album, called 1229 Sheffield.
According to sources, the Counting Crows, who haven't contributed a song to a soundtrack since 1995's Clueless, were going to get into the mix, but that possibility now looks as dead as Boone's career. "It wasn't something that fits the band at the moment," said a spokesperson at the band's management company.
Americana stalwarts the Old 97's will ante up "Timebomb" from Too Far to Care.
Clay Pigeons, a dark comedy directed by first-time
filmmaker David Dobkin, stars Joaquin
Phoenix (To Die For), Vince
Vaughn (Swingers) and Janeane
Garofalo (The Truth About Cats and Dogs), and
will hit theaters this summer. (Blair R. Fischer for Rolling
Stone Network)
