On their second album, In Love and Death, Utah's the Used match high-density, high-impact emo metal with singer Bert McCracken's cheese-ball tendencies -- most notably on "I Caught Fire (In Your Eyes)," where spidery guitar lines and tense syncopation lead to a swooning chorus. "Listening" lays McCracken's spastic tantrums over shifting, hard-driving rhythms; "Yesterday's Feelings" is a glockenspiel-laden reverie and one of several surprisingly gentle numbers. The songwriting is all too callow at times, but McCracken's earnest moments suggest classic-rock romanticism rather than the cathartic self-pity of similarly worked-up young 'uns. When the Used are at their best, one extreme makes the other easier to swallow.
