Album Reviews
The United States Of America
1997
Audacious in name and vision, this Los Angeles band founded by composer and keyboardist Joseph Byrd recorded only one album in its short lifetime, this LP issued by Columbia in 1968. But there was nothing like it in psychedelia at the time, and it remains a bold marvel: truly electronic rock, made entirely without guitars, with riffing ring modulators and distorted lead violin chasing the mercury alto of singer Dorothy Moskowitz. The free-fall beauty of "Love Song for the Dead Che" and the scalding jump of "Coming Down" will have you wondering how the future promised here stalled with the Prodigy.
