The Complete Motown Singles Vol. 11A: 1971  Hear it Now

RS: 3.5of 5 Stars

2008

Here is Motown in 45 rpm overdrive — 119 tracks from the first half of 1971, as the label branches, often unwisely, into mainstream pop and rock. But there is also a new balance of honed funk and L.A. sparkle — "Nathan Jones" by the post-Diana Ross Supremes, the Undisputed Truth's "Smiling Faces Sometimes" — along with fine sides by Edwin Starr and Eddie Kendricks. Marvin Gaye entered his greatest era that year with What's Going On; here you get the title hit as you would have heard it on the radio, amid solid singles by the Temptations and the Jackson 5.
