Album Reviews
One Step Closer represents a step in the right direction for String Cheese Incident, a veteran jam band with a goofy name and impressive bluegrass chops. Working with producer Malcolm Burn has allowed String Cheese to focus on the one thing bands of their ilk far too often forget about: songs. One Step Closer, their fifth album, features some real stunners, including a new and improved version of "45th of November," which keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth wrote with longtime Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. At their worst, String Cheese Incident still sound like just another Dead-worshiping jam band, but that appears to be changing.
