Album Reviews

Like a few New York bands these days, the Rogers Sisters invoke a 1978 of the imagination: Back in the day, American punk and New Wave were entirely separate camps; one was for pogoing, the other for dancing. But the Rogers fuse vitriol and limber funk into a single buzz bomb, perhaps because they remember Bikini Kill better than they do the Runaways. The Rogers come equipped with political fury and wit: Male bassist and honorary riot grrrl Miyuki Furtado takes over the mike in "Fantasies Are Nice," yelping, "I bought the White House!/I bought the Pentagon!" The music is as impassioned as the words. Singer-guitarist Jennifer Rogers' seething anti-solo in "You Won't Believe It" seems to be composed of random leftover notes, the ones that didn't make it into those epic Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore breaks of the mid-Seventies. But the results are sharp enough to draw blood.
