Prodigy Is Targeted

warning lables

Posted Dec 18, 1997 12:00 AM

Maverick beat mavens Prodigy will be forced to smack a warning on new albums containing the controversial single, "Smack My Bitch Up." |

The Target retail chain will require that all copies of Prodigy's newest album, Fat of the Land, be given a parental warning label -- an action that supports critical belief that the single is misogynistic and glorifies violence.

Bob Merlis, a spokesman for Warner Bros., which co-owns Maverick with Madonna, said the warning stickers were being sent to Target only.

Fat of the Land has been out since the summer and has since sold two million copies in the U.S. Target Competitors such as Wal-Mart and K Mart have decided to stop selling the album within the last two weeks.

The newly released video for Smack My Bitch Up has come under similar fire for adult content, having been banned from most major video resources. You be the judge. Check out the uneditied video on JAMTV's homepage. (Brandon Barber)
