The Dead Live Again

The Other Ones to tour this fall

Posted Aug 06, 2002 12:00 AM

After a successful two-day reunion festival last weekend, the surviving members of the Grateful Dead -- guitarist/singer Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, drummer Bill Kreutzman and percussionist Mickey Hart -- will reunite for a thirteen-date tour to launch November 14th in Roanoke, Virginia. The dates currently run through December 2nd in Rosemont, Illinois, though the itinerary might be extended.

Three days ago, more than 30,000 fans descended upon East Troy, Wisconsin for Terrapin Station: A Grateful Dead Family Reunion. The live Dead members performed together as the Other Ones, as well as playing with their respective projects: Weir's Ratdog, Kreutzmann's TriChromes, Lesh's Phil Lesh and Friends and Hart's Bembe Orishu. As with the Terrapin Station festival, the Other Ones will feature guitarist/singer Jimmy Herring and keyboardists Rob Barocco and Jeff Chimenti.

The reunion follows several years of infighting among the band following the death of guitarist/singer/figurehead Jerry Garcia. Prior to Terrapin Station, the Other Ones hadn't performed together since 1995. "No matter what disagreements have taken place over the past few years," said Dead historian and publicist Dennis McNally, "nobody has forgotten they're a family." McNally penned the band's first official book about the band, A Long Strange Trip, which is due in stores this month.
