Coming from a dance-floor pioneer like the Orb's Alex Paterson, Cydonia is a surprisingly familiar trip. We've heard these drawling, somnambulant rhythms and atmospheric samples before, most notably on 1997's Orblivion. Still, this thirteen-track CD offers a beautifully accomplished lesson in classic ambient-house artistry. Paterson and co-producer Andy Hughes' fusion of vocals, quivering flutes and natural sounds - water and birds, mostly - with thrumming dance beats is standard chill-out fare. In their adept hands, a track like the psychedelic "A Mile Long Lump of Lard" invites meditation rather than the mind-numbing trance of many of the Orb's contemporaries. "Ghostdancing" nods off to its own repetitive mantra, but "Turn It Down" and "Thursday's Keeper" inject enough high-bpm energy to keep the rest of the album conscious. Cydonia might just be the sound of Paterson's talent running - or playing - in place, but it makes for a lovely portrait in stasis. (RS 868 -- May 10, 2001)
