All through the Summer of Love, while Sgt. Pepper was Number One on the charts, the Monkees locked down the Number Two spot (for eleven weeks!) with Headquarters. Nobody has ever called Headquarters the second-greatest album of all time, but as a pop encounter with the hippie moment, it's hard to beat. Enjoying creative control for their third album, high on the hippie vibes in the air, the Prefab Four cruise through L.A.-sunshine pop with folk-rock hooks - plus a couple of terrible ballads for Davy Jones. "You Told Me" and "Sunny Girlfriend" rank among the Monkees' most euphoric moments. Mike Nesmith chases his country muse in "You Just May Be the One," Micky Dolenz shines in the peace-and-love hymn "For Pete's Sake," while Peter Tork sings the hook of "Shades of Gray," an all-time high of Torkmanship.
