Album Reviews
If They Knew This Was the End is the Mendoza Line's debut as the band intended it to be heard. Composed of tracks recorded in 1996 during their tumultuous beginnings, the album was never compiled for reasons that have never been clearly explained. But despite its "lost album" status, there is nothing revelatory here; the band ties on several alt-rock hats, from Americana ("I Behaved That Way") to guitar-heavy indie pop ("Comeback") without sounding convincing in any of them. Many of these tracks eventually appeared on other -- and better -- Mendoza Line albums, and this new context doesn't lend them anything new. This one is for fans only.
