"Rome is the city of pizza!" exults Peter Zaremba on "Take a Walk With the Fleshtones" – digging Western civ's cradle not for Michelangelo but for its fast food. Musically, the Fleshtones, together since the dawn of punk, offer similarly tasty slumming, echoing the Soul Survivors and Shadows of Knight rather than more-hallowed rock gods. Zaremba's David Johansen-wanna-be vocals kick, as do Keith Streng's guitar and Peter Buck's production, and when the Fleshtones resist the archness that sometimes infects their artful trash, they deliver grins. Their ballads display big hearts as well, and the combo even waxes inspirational – as when Zaremba gently reminds us that "Not Everybody's Jesus" (Ichiban, P.O. box 724677, Atlanta, Ga 31139, or call [404] 419-1414).
