Album Reviews
For a brother-sister act on their eighth album, Fiery Furnaces' Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger remain remarkably, purposefully and gloriously out of joint. The duo's quirky cabaret rock spurts and skips with bursts of scatting, piano histrionics and electric-guitar spasms. Like previous albums, I'm Going Away is long on imaginative-but-uncatchy brain ticklers. But there are moments of pop bliss and twinges of Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie on the boppy, glammed-out "Charmaine Champagne." And "Lost at Sea," which has a Seventies-AM vibe, even concludes with — gasp! — a killer, bona fide groove.
