The Exies are upwardly mobile Los Angeles dudes who've obviously spent a lot of time studying the past ten years of modern-rock radio. Their third album mashes up Stone Temple Pilots' dark, winding metal melodics with overdriven Nirvana-meets-Linkin-Park howls, and nearly every song features a can't-miss chorus that explodes like well-shaken Mountain Dew. (The soft-loud-soft anthem "Ugly" has already become a theme song for World Wrestling Entertainment.) The Exies only really sound like their own band on "Don't Push the River," which turns their familiar fits of agony into something truly over-the-top.
