Classic rock fans heading down to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival during the second weekend are in for a surprise -- the Doobie Brothers are reuniting.|

The Doobies, with Michael McDonald, will hit a main stage at the fair grounds on May 2. That night, the group -- Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons, Michael Hossack, Keith Knudson and John McFee -- will perform at the UNO Lakefront Arena.

Although McDonald has sporadically appeared with his old outfit over the last couple of years, the show at Jazz Fest is the only scheduled collaboration for 1998. According to a representative for McDonald at Bruce Cohn Management, the former Doobie's frontman sings with the band when he feels like it. "There's nothing else scheduled at this time, but you never know," she said.

In addition to the Doobies, festival goers heading down to the Bayou between April 30 and May 2 can also take in sets from Ani DiFranco, Ziggy Marley, Emmylou Harris and the Neville Brothers. (Ari Bendersky)
