4-11-44 is the first new studio album by roots-rock cult favorites the Blasters since 1985, back when they and their friends X were paving the way for a generation of bands that would combine punk's energy and irreverence with traditional American blues, R&B and country. Sadly, 4-11-44 just doesn't have the rabble-rousing spirit of their early albums. Not only do they stick too faithfully to formulaic rockabilly, but the edges (particularly on the production) have softened to the point where songs such as "Love Is My Business" and "Julie" come off like easy-listening oldies.
