this debut album by the black angels sounds like something you've heard before, but in a good way. it has deep psychadelic roots in cream, the velvet underground, early jefferson airplane, and the rhythmic guitar and drums of early black sabbath. i wouldn't call what they produce metal, by any stretch, but it is a wonderful, refreshing album of grindy, deep, reverb ridden rock. the rhythmic pounding of thier drum set mixed with tamborine punches and overdriven thumping bass and guitar riffs are just sick. mix all that in with a howling, swooning vocal track on songs such as "better off alone", and "black grease," you get a hard psychadelic blues band delivery that we haven't heard since the acid rock days of the late 60's and early 70's. if you miss checking this band out, then you should trade in your led zeppelin and buddy guy albums in for neil sedaka and air supply. great debut, and i'd bet even better and more to come.
